Tulsi points out that Ram had taken Avatar with a view to help and bestow his grace on his devotees. His life as Avatar can not be said to be a very pleasant one according to the common point view of a decent comfortable life. He suffered all types of fates and misfortunes, may be more than the most would have experienced in life. This is not to say that He is affected in any way by the comforts or distress because Ram as God is not supposed to have the impact of Gunas ( three qualities of Satva , Rajas and Tamas) on his personality, He is above this. Since He had vowed to be bound by ‘maryada’ (the limitations of ordinary people) in His Ram Avatar, He played out His part on the earth with the same constraints and still did not deviate from the path of ‘Dharma’ and got to be called Vigrahvaan Dharma (i e embodiment of Dharma). This is how he gave the desired pleasures to the noble persons in form of relief in distress and also in form of having His company and glimpse of His very endearing personality. His Bhaktas therefore have the instant happiness and auspiciousness themselves and also so act for the society at large just by chanting Ram Naam.

Ram as Avatar had just delivered one cursed woman (wife of a Rishi called as Ahalya) from the miserable condition of living as a stone but Ram Naam has been the source of such reliefs to many who happened to go on wrong path in the moments of weakness. Ram Naam makes wrong traits, the bondage, the miseries and unwanted desires disappear like the sun makes the darkness of night disappear right when it shows up in the morning. Here it should be so understood that the God realization is not by an effort but is due to grace of God which makes one enlightened in the same way as the sun does the dark night as if it did not exist. The knowledge of God is available to all just when the darkness i e misconceived notions get removed form the heart.

Ram as Avatar had just broken the bow of Lord Shiva who is also called as Bhav ( another meaning of Bhav is the visible world ) but Ram Naam does it all the time i e breaks the spell of whatever is mundane.

Ram as Avatar had lived for some time in Dandak Van ( a forest) and had made it a gifted place converting it from a dreaded place but Ram Naam has the capacity to make the expense of heart which has so many wild thought into a sort of tended garden or say a place with pious thoughts.

Ram as Avatar had crushed many a demons and devilish persons along with their supporters who had made life of good people difficult to be lived in proper ways but the Ram Naam has the capacity to take away sting of the present day living as this period is called Kaliyuga with a characteristic excesses of behavior.

Ram as Avatar had liberated Shabari ( a low cast person living in jungles but who was devoted fully to Ram as per guidance of her Guru) and a vulture who had tried to save Sita from hands of Ravana i e who had engaged in Ram Kaaj (worked for Ram’s cause)as also others who engaged similarly helping Ram in His endeavor. This means that nothing else is required i e being a high-born, educated or accomplished to get the salvation and deliverance, just a life lived with an understanding of properly serving the cause which has approval of God ( in a broad sense service without self) makes it possible to be entitled for the ‘Mukti’. The following are the original lines of the epic:

We are now at the first day’s rest for the month long reading of Ram Charit Manas. Tulsi says that Ram as Avtar gave shelter to Sugreev (also called Sukanth) and Vibhishan (story will unfold later) but Ram Naam has given shelter to many. There is common knowledge of this and religious books are strewn with praises of such people who took Ran Naam as savior. While Ram organized a whole army of monkeys for creating bridge across seas at great effort but the surprise is this that those who relied on Ram Naam had occasion to go across the Bhava Sindhu (the ocean of life and death) without much effort. It is important to understand that the life is a series of miseries in the end with just a few chapters of happiness and satisfaction. The pleasurable times end up in the problematic times. Nothing is permanently pleasure giving, this is the experience of all. Ram Naam helps in preparing mind for making life’s difficult journey easier to finish.

Ram had finished Ravan along with his family and had gone back to his home in Ayodhya at the end of the war with Sita and ruled over Avadh (i e Ayodhya) in a way that gods, ‘munis’ and rest praised Him for the very peaceful regime in his times. Symbolically this means that Ram as God has power to kill the baser tendencies and there would be total peace where there is no strife (Avadh’s literal meaning is where there is no killing or offense). Ram demonstrated this very aspect of his. The Ram Naam aslo ensures the very same for those who rely on Ram Naam. Such devotees remain in a calmer state of being just because they recite Ram Naam. Chanting of Ram Naam has a subtle effect, in long run if done with some devotion and profound faith, on the psyche of Bhaktas which gives him insight required for grasping the reality and knowing God.

Ram , the Supreme God, and as an Avatar when compared with Ram Naam in the sphere of help to people, the Ram Naam exceeds in effectiveness because the nearness is almost ensured through out the period with Ram Naam. Lord Shiva has this understanding and therefore Ram Naam and Ram Katha have found a permanent place right in his heart and mind.

The relevant lines have been reproduced below:
