Ramcharit Charcha XLIV

II Shri Guruvey NamahII

Jai Shri Ram,

II Sri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram II
II Sri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram II
II Sri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram II

Goswami Tuslidas now refers to beautiful story of Swayamvar (where all worthy kings desirous of marriage are invited and the ‘to be bride’ chooses one herself as ‘to be husband’ or it is as per the required winning of a contest) of Sita which is an specially interesting episode of the river of Ram Katha giving it an lovable aura.

Further in the Katha is the episode of Kevat’s tricky questioning and and answers at the time of Ram’s crossing of Ganges while going in exile as per Dashrath’s untold compulsions and Ram’s exemplary behavior in honoring father’s commitment.

There is reference of Bhrigunath (also known as Parsuram) showing an aggressiveness on account of displeasure about Dhanush of Shiva (bow of Shiva) being broken. Shiva happened to be his Guru and Isht. To counter the raised temper of Rishi Parshuram, Ram’s cool response is another interesting spot which gives a sort of embanking to the flow of Ram Katha.

Here it may be taken that Ram Katha has through out an underlying discipline of controlled arguments although very intricate situations have been covered, this makes it a pleasant reading and avoids extremism which is often despised even though an important aspect is being revealed.

The performance of rituals of marriage of all four brothers together is very enthusing and pleasure giving. Post the marriage period when King Dashrath decides to enthrone Lord Ram, a callousness is imparted in the psyche of Kaikeyi by Manthra and its like slippery weed that develops where there is flow of water but is obstructed by unevenness of surface. The resulting fall of unfortunate happening have reference in Ram Katha too.

The placating behavior of Bharat in times of this very big crisis in the family’s history gives an insight into the great character of Bharat and his avowed penances and discharge of duties. The ills of the time are like Kaliyga and the heart rending dialogues of Kaikeyi are like crying of crow and sounds of ducks, not very pleasant to hear is the sense we should make out.

The above describes some important events that have significance for the understanding of Dharma as has been practiced by Ram for the enlightenment of people, these episodes also guide the common people as to how to perform rituals and celebrate events in one’s life. It tells what kind of interactions have what kind of effect which ultimately turn a normal situation in a situation hard to deal with, hence the need for caution. The sensible attitude of even one in the family saves the pride of family and its togetherness, such a one is Bharat , the younger brother of Ram. You are now embarking on the journey of Ram Katha and each steps will be something to take the lesson from hence full alertness is required.
