We covered up to Doha 141 of Balkand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas in the last post and learned that Lord Shiv would now tell Parvati about the events that caused the avatar of Shri Ram as King of Ayodhya and the purposes that would be served. Based on what transpired between Lord Shiv and Parvati, Rishi Yagyavalkya commits to relate it all for the benefit of Muni Bhardwaj.

There was a king called as Swayambhu Manu (Swyambhu means one who has come in to being by himself i e the first male human and the first king) whose wife’s name was Shatruupa (its word meaning is ‘one who is hundred faceted’), it was them who were responsible for the beginning of the of the human race, such human race that held a special status among the all the animate beings on earth. Their son was called Uttanpaad. Uttanpaad happened to be father of Dhruv* who was a devout Bhakta of Lord Hari.

The younger son of Manu was Priyavrata, the Vedas and Poranas mention him too with great respect and praise him. The couple had a daughter too by the name of Devhuti who was married to Muni kardam. Devhuti bore a son who was none other than the beginning-less God and who came to be known as Kapil, a compassionate avatar of God Himself. Sankhya Shastra (an shcool of philosophy which deals with the ultimate principles regarding the knowledge of God) was expounded by Lord Kapil being an expert pursuer of the basic knowledge about the phenomenon that God is.

The above referred king Manu ruled for a very extended period of time and followed the dictates of God honoring all the principles of right governance and proper living as humans on earth.

After the prolonged life lived on earth in righteous manner one fine day King Manu thought that I have lived for far too long under a roof (as a householder and a king) but the interest in sensual pleasure has not diminished. King Manu reflected on his life and became saddened that he has wasted all his time without doing Bhakti of Lord Hari (this conveys to us that even a long life well lived, even according to well established principles of co-operation and honesty does not give an inner peace which comes about only when the Lord Hari’s Bhakti is indulged in, the devotion to God is the only means of being at permanent peace and not mundane living even though with all material endowment).

We have now covered up to Doha 142 of Balkand.

*Story of Dhruv has been covered in Poranik literature, Dhruv had gone in to forest up on getting ill-treatment from his father at the instigation of his step-mother and was then guided by Muni Narad who gave him a Mantra and asked for doing Japa and tapa which Dhruva very diligently did and got to have Saakshaatkaar (saw Him face to face) of God who gave Him boon etc and pleased with Dhruv’s efforts in finding Him gave Him an unmoving place in the sky as a star which is known by name of Dhruv and is always at the same point in sky when looked from earth.
