बरबस राज सुतहि तब दीन्हा। नारि समेत गवन बन कीन्हा।।
तीरथ बर नैमिष बिख्याता। अति पुनीत साधक सिधि दाता।।
बसहिं तहाँ मुनि सिद्ध समाजा। तहँ हियँ हरषि चलेउ मनु राजा।।
पंथ जात सोहहिं मतिधीरा। ग्यान भगति जनु धरें सरीरा।।
पहुँचे जाइ धेनुमति तीरा। हरषि नहाने निरमल नीरा।।
आए मिलन सिद्ध मुनि ग्यानी। धरम धुरंधर नृपरिषि जानी।।
जहँ जँह तीरथ रहे सुहाए। मुनिन्ह सकल सादर करवाए।।
कृस सरीर मुनिपट परिधाना। सत समाज नित सुनहिं पुराना ।
दो0-द्वादस अच्छर मंत्र पुनि जपहिं सहित अनुराग।
बासुदेव पद पंकरुह दंपति मन अति लाग।।143।।

We covered up to Doha 143 of Balkand in Ramcharit Manas in the last post and learned that King Manu and his wife Shatrupa have been initiated by Rishis in the forest (Nemish) and they have begun their Tapa. They now do Japa of the Dwadashakashar Mantra (the lettered Mantra) with absolute devotion at the feet of Bhagwaan Vaasudev (Lord Hari) which is now growing by the day.

The couple (Manu and Shatrupa) limited their food intake to vegetables, fruits and edible stems and reflected on the Brahaman who is all truth,consciousness and bliss (i e the formless God), initially. Then they preferred to do Tapa for the sake of Lord Hari (i e Bhagwaan Vishnu, who is the God but seen as having four arms, holding Shankh-conch, Chakra-circling wheel, Gada-mace and Padma-lotus, each symbolizing his functions in sustaining the world. It is the belief of Rishis and the Vedas that for the mortal human it is much less tiresome to reflect on an image of God rather then be concentrating on the formless but in the end the dawn of knowledge makes it immaterial. This is the foundation of Hinduism of today and has been in past too.) and they quit having even the roots and fruits of the plants for sustenance of life but still depended on water.

Their heart ever clamored for the Darshan (direct visualization) of the same Supreme God (who is being worshiped as Hari i e wanted to see him in form of Hari) through their own eyes (the Rishis say that the Tapa when ripe results in the constant visual image of the same form of God that one is contemplating up on). The couple has firm belief that it is the same attribute-less, undivided whole, endless and without beginning, He is the one who is contemplated up on by the exponents of ultimate reality (i e their is no basic difference in Hari as God and God as the formless one).

The Vedas have been trying to convey the reality (of God) by pointing out ‘not this’-‘not this’ (though God has also been said to be all that appears but he is more than what appears), the fact about God is that He is without attributes and is Himself blissful (or say is complete in Himself for His blissfulness without requiring any outside help as nothing is outside Him).

The trinity of creator,sustainer and destroyer as God’s representatives ( i e Brahma-Vishnu-Mahesh) come into being for the functioning of universes out of just a fraction of infinite totality of God Supreme. Such a Master is still under obligation to His servant in the sense that He takes birth as avatars taking forms for purpose of performing Leelas (various activities on earth) solely for benefit of His Bhaktas.

They thought that if all this (the foregoing descriptions) what Shrutis (Vedas) also purport to be the the truth about the Supreme God then without doubt their own core desire will be fulfilled (this kind of belief is immensely helpful in getting the glimpse of the God in the form that has been desired and will result in dawn of knowledge).

With these thoughts and the living on water as nourishment, the couple spent six thousand years and followed it by just remaining dependent on breathing air for strength for another period extending to seven thousand years (it has been seen that with a constant fixation of mind on a singular thought regarding God reduces the body’s requirement to minimal level for remaining alive, the needed strength is provided by the Pran-Vayu, the breathing of air which is contains energy particles. We should not apply logic to find correctness of mention of time etc, the Yogis have lived for far longer time than modern medical science will confirm).

We have now covered up to Doha 144 of Balkand.

करहिं अहार साक फल कंदा। सुमिरहिं ब्रह्म सच्चिदानंदा।।
पुनि हरि हेतु करन तप लागे। बारि अधार मूल फल त्यागे।।
उर अभिलाष निंरंतर होई। देखअ नयन परम प्रभु सोई।।
अगुन अखंड अनंत अनादी। जेहि चिंतहिं परमारथबादी।।
नेति नेति जेहि बेद निरूपा। निजानंद निरुपाधि अनूपा।।
संभु बिरंचि बिष्नु भगवाना। उपजहिं जासु अंस तें नाना।।
ऐसेउ प्रभु सेवक बस अहई। भगत हेतु लीलातनु गहई।।
जौं यह बचन सत्य श्रुति भाषा। तौ हमार पूजहि अभिलाषा।।
दो0-एहि बिधि बीतें बरष षट सहस बारि आहार।
संबत सप्त सहस्त्र पुनि रहे समीर अधार।।144।।
