करहिं अहार साक फल कंदा। सुमिरहिं ब्रह्म सच्चिदानंदा।।
पुनि हरि हेतु करन तप लागे। बारि अधार मूल फल त्यागे।।
उर अभिलाष निंरंतर होई। देखअ नयन परम प्रभु सोई।।
अगुन अखंड अनंत अनादी। जेहि चिंतहिं परमारथबादी।।
नेति नेति जेहि बेद निरूपा। निजानंद निरुपाधि अनूपा।।
संभु बिरंचि बिष्नु भगवाना। उपजहिं जासु अंस तें नाना।।
ऐसेउ प्रभु सेवक बस अहई। भगत हेतु लीलातनु गहई।।
जौं यह बचन सत्य श्रुति भाषा। तौ हमार पूजहि अभिलाषा।।
दो0-एहि बिधि बीतें बरष षट सहस बारि आहार।
संबत सप्त सहस्त्र पुनि रहे समीर अधार।।144।।

We covered up to Doha 144 of Balkand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas in the last post and learned that Manu and Shatrupa have entered difficult phase of Tapa by even foregoing all kinds of food and depended only on water then only on air. They kept clamoring to have glimpse of Lord Hari with full devotion.

Manu and Shatrupa then entered a phase in course of their Tapa that they stopped their intake of even air (i e held breath) for ten thousand years (now this may sound mythical but may be so understood that they became so unaware of body that not even breathing happened unmindfully) and both of them stood on one leg only now (let us understand it in this way that both shed all sense of duality and became one with cosmos, part of the universal consciousness).

Their level of achievement in process of Tapa now was at such a stage that Brahma (the creator) and Hari (the sustainer) took note of it and they made contacts with Manu time and again and asked him to ask for boons and offered other tempting proposals (Brahma and Vishnu thought that Manu has crossed all those limits that were supposed by them to be unsurpassable, this prompted them to give Manu some extra powers etc). The divine intervention did not make them deviate from the path they had chosen due to their steadfastness. Their body lost all flesh and they become skeletons but were beyond feeling any kind of sadness or pain.

The all-knowledgeable omniscient God now became aware that the ascetic royal couple was now fully devoted to His own service without seeking any thing else or any other fate. In this light there the heavenly voice thundered in skies, it was steeped in nectar of grace and compassion for them, “‘ask for boon'” and when this life giving sound reached the hearts of the couple through ear-holes they became healthy and strong in body, they looked as charming as when they had come from their palace earlier.

Manu became very very happy listening to the life giving message, bodily thrilled and bristled. Then after falling prostrate on ground (convinced that it was God Supreme that had addressed him) and with heart overflowing with love Manu started uttering his emotions.

We have now covered Doha 145 of Balkand.

बरष सहस दस त्यागेउ सोऊ। ठाढ़े रहे एक पद दोऊ।।
बिधि हरि तप देखि अपारा। मनु समीप आए बहु बारा।।
मागहु बर बहु भाँति लोभाए। परम धीर नहिं चलहिं चलाए।।
अस्थिमात्र होइ रहे सरीरा। तदपि मनाग मनहिं नहिं पीरा।।
प्रभु सर्बग्य दास निज जानी। गति अनन्य तापस नृप रानी।।
मागु मागु बरु भै नभ बानी। परम गभीर कृपामृत सानी।।
मृतक जिआवनि गिरा सुहाई। श्रबन रंध्र होइ उर जब आई।।
ह्रष्टपुष्ट तन भए सुहाए। मानहुँ अबहिं भवन ते आए।।
दो0-श्रवन सुधा सम बचन सुनि पुलक प्रफुल्लित गात।
बोले मनु करि दंडवत प्रेम न हृदयँ समात।।145।।

(Manu and Shatrupa did Tapa for thousands of years and this may sound strange but the explanation lies in this that in Vedic philosophy it is presumed that humans go through cycle of births and deaths, they get the next birth according to Karma of the previous birth, the righteous and God centric living ensures next birth in homes of well-off and high families ensuring a good religiously charged atmosphere and teachings to make further progress in spiritual field (In Bhagwad Gita Lord Krishna also mentions this). The time between the death and next birth is spent in heavens and realm of gods where the hunger and thirst are not felt, also a day there equals one year spent on earth (this also finds mention in Poranik literature). Manu and Shatrupa fulfilled these conditions and their desire for salvation may well have stayed with them in the all the births that they may have had to live through and they may have engaged in Tapa in ever increasing way and time thus spent may well have been in thousands of years if the interim period between death and birth is taken in calculation. In fact best is to understand the whole account to reinforce the belief for which it is told rather be too interested in possibility of it etc. This is where the belief and faith have to be given full respect, this is what has been so thoroughly emphasized right in the beginning of Ramcharit Manas. It is welcomed that people question and apply logic etc in pursuit of spiritual knowledge but basic truth as explained by Vedas should be tried to be understood by application of positive logic and negative logic should be discarded, ultimately all pieces of puzzle will fall in place leaving no room for doubt is the assurance given in Vedas and by realized Gurus.)
