We covered up to Doha 148 of Balkand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas in our last post and learned that after appearing before the royal couple Lord Ram has lifted them up when they fell at his feet losing their body-consciousness and offered to be asked for any kind of boon from Him.

Shatrupa and Manu listened the words of Lord and keeping their composure, joining palms of both their hands (when both hands are joined a message immediately goes across to the person in front that one with folded hands is fully present before the other as he has shed all activity for time being as hands are free and in surrender mode) Manu spoke in a soft tone of voice, “O Master, after we have seen your lotus feet (lotus symbolizes purity and looking at feet of Lord means that some basic and deep knowledge has been gained) all our concerns have been answered, all our desires have been fulfilled. Yet, there remains a desire which is close to our hearts but we fail to understand that whether it is easy to be had or difficult to be given, however, we think though it is well nigh possible for you to give it to us yet we find it hard for ourselves to ask for it due to our own lack of courage.

“It is like that when a pauper has a wish-yielding tree before him does not go asking for too much of riches. He is not able to think of the power and potential the tree has and remains shy in asking much, in the same way we have a doubt (unfounded) but You know what is there in all other hearts and therefore grant us what we long for, O Lord.”

The Lord then asked the King Manu to demand without reservations as nothing is impossible for Him to grant.

Manu when thus encouraged bagan asking, “O the Donor of the highest order,O Gracious Lord, I ask with a pure heart that my sole desire is to have son like Yourself. O Master, there is nothing that can remain concealed from you.”

(Here it may be noted that when a couple see a person as beautiful as Lord, they are so overwhelmed due to Mamata (affection for children) which is a predominant emotion in wedded couple, and could not resist the temptation of getting a son as beautiful as Lord Ram. We may have any kind of relationship with Lord, which is guided by the most prevalent emotion present in individuals, this can not be easily erased and hence the best course is to achieve perfection in love towards God with the help of that particular emotion. The Lord accepts this love wholeheartedly because love is what is important for the God and since it is He only in all forms, such devotion yields the same result in spirituality. Manu and Shatrupa had gone for Tapa together, now when the occasion came Manu decided to have such a boon that would be equally desirable to both of them.)

We have now covered up to Doha 149 of Balkand.
