We covered up to Doha 152 of Balkand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas in the last post and learned that the Supreme Lord has given His word, which is always final, to Manu and Shatrupa promising to descend on earth in human form in their family to perform Leelas that would cheer up the people of the world besides will guide them on spiritual path. This was the end of the story behind one of Lord’s avatars on earth and next is going to be further mentioned.

Rishi Yagyavalkya now relates to Muni Bhardwaj another story that is behind one of the avatars of Lord on earth, “O Muni, listen to another of old sacred tales which Lord Shankar had told Girija (Parvati). It goes like this that there was a principality known as Kaikay Desh where a king called Satyaketu (this word means as the one who keeps the flag of truth flying high) ruled. He was profoundly devoted to acting righteously, followed only well intentioned policies, was powerful, was influential and cultured. The king had two very powerful sons by the names of Pratapbhanu (the word means glorious like sun) and Arimardan (meaning killer of enemies). These princes were very virtuous and had staying power on battle front. The elder of the two i e Pratapbhanu though made the king of the kingdom, the younger one also was very strong-armed and had unequaled capacity to fight fiercely on the battle-ground. Both the brothers had good equation between them; they had guileless and pure love for each other. When the King Satyaketu wanted to go to forest to spend the rest of life devoted to Lord Hari, he proclaimed his elder son Pratapbhanu as the king.

The whole kingdom was made aware that Pratapbhanu had become the king with fanfare. Pratapbhanu, being people oriented, ruled relentlessly following all the dictates of the Vedas regarding good governance (it is not possible to rightly govern only by what one thinks as right, it is more important to follow the laid down and time tested principles of statehood. The young king therefore governed in rightest ways). It left no room for sinning at all.

We have now covered up to Doha 153 of Balkand.
