We covered up to Doha 153 of Balkand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas in the last post and learned that another story behind the one of the avatars of Lord Hari is being told and its about an efficient and sincere king (Pratapbhanu) who has an illustrious family and has made sure that no sin is committed in his kingdom.

The king had a knowledgeable and amiable lieutenant called Dharmruchi (the word itself means the one who has interest in propriety and justice), he was no less than the Sukra, the state-adviser and Guru of Daityas (Daityas were very powerful clan and were opposed to Devatas). The king was himself very gallant and possessed staying power in the battle-ground and was joined by a brave/powerful brother and a prudent/wise counselor. He had four winged army of very strong soldiers who were well trained in combative war. The king looked at his fighting machinery and was pleased with its strength. He ordered them to prepare for war with a view to win. The kettledrum etc were beaten to make big sound as an announcement to that effect. His armies marched and fought many wars defeating all other kings who were considered powerful. In this manner he extended his kingdom to all the seven continents after forcing the defeated kings to pay tribute he let them go (when the kings accepted his sub-ordination the king released them from his captivity). The whole earth then had just one as the sovereign monarch and it was Pratapbhanu.

After accomplishing his worldwide supremacy with his own might, the king (Pratapbhanu) returned to his own capital. The king then started enjoying his wealth for fulfillment of his desires but in a controlled fashion as also saw that all religious duties are properly observed.

(There are four objectives in a life of a person i e Artha (generation of wealth), Dharma (living righteously and observing religious practices with the wealth in hand), Kama (fulfill ones’ worldly desires with help of wealth generated) and lastly Moksha (go past all this and seek God and find Him i e know Him, so that cycle of rebirth is broken. The king has successfully passed muster leaving the fourth (Moksha) post unattended. The story also tells that when a kingdom is ruled in a principled manner and judiciously, it naturally becomes strong and may win lesser kings as in such a kingdom the fellow citizens are not wronged and the nation becomes strong paving way for all kinds of enjoyments with help of abounding wealth etc. It also tells that ruling clan should be congenial to each other i e there should not be any intrigues at play in upper echelons.)

We have now covered up to Doha 154 of Balkand.
