भलेहिं नाथ आयसु धरि सीसा। बाँधि तुरग तरु बैठ महीसा।।
नृप बहु भाति प्रसंसेउ ताही। चरन बंदि निज भाग्य सराही।।
पुनि बोले मृदु गिरा सुहाई। जानि पिता प्रभु करउँ ढिठाई।।
मोहि मुनिस सुत सेवक जानी। नाथ नाम निज कहहु बखानी।।
तेहि न जान नृप नृपहि सो जाना। भूप सुह्रद सो कपट सयाना।।
बैरी पुनि छत्री पुनि राजा। छल बल कीन्ह चहइ निज काजा।।
समुझि राजसुख दुखित अराती। अवाँ अनल इव सुलगइ छाती।।
सरल बचन नृप के सुनि काना। बयर सँभारि हृदयँ हरषाना।।
दो0-कपट बोरि बानी मृदुल बोलेउ जुगुति समेत।
नाम हमार भिखारि अब निर्धन रहित निकेति।।160।।

We covered up to Doha 160 of Balkand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas in the last post and learned that the two kings, one winner and the other defeated, are getting along well while one is ignorant of the reality of the other and the defeated one is laying trap (Pratapbhanu is guided by his own desire and undue interest and ex-king too has some desire but is also jealous and nurses grudge. As both do not have any sense of duty behind their actions but only want sense gratification hence their Karmas are binding in nature and will result in disaster).

King Pratapbhanu responds saying, “those who are rich in understanding and have knowledge of supreme God too, do not keep pride (i e they have got rid of false ego, this is true also for a man of God and Pratapbhanu has already mistaken the other as such a one). They prefer to keep their true identities concealed at all times (because they don’t wish to draw benefit by pronouncing this though in fact the ex-king precisely opposite as his goal); they are capable of having their way and doing every thing expertly but still remain not very smartly clothed. It is on this account that saints and the Vedas declare that those who do not want opulence and wealth are loved by Lord Hari otherwise when people like you (i e who are very capable) are seen as penniless and homeless beggars, even Brahma and Shiv become confused. Whoever are you, I bow down at your feet; shower your graces on me, lord.”

Establishing closeness with Pratapbhanu after noticing a his natural kind of affection and profound faith towards himself the ex-king spoke displaying great affection, “O King, listen, I am telling you with all sincerity that I have lived here for a very long time but I haven’t let it be known and no body has seen me here. It is because I know that the public attention and acceptance are like fire which burns the forest of penance (i e the progress achieved in spiritual field finishes in interaction with public).

Tulsidas tells that looking at just an attractive attire only the fools get influenced not the really wise. Look at peacock, it may look beautiful and may release very sweet sounds but devours even snakes easily (i e the wisdom lies in judging some one through some more reliable means than by just a mere look on its outward appearance).

कह नृप जे बिग्यान निधाना। तुम्ह सारिखे गलित अभिमाना।।
सदा रहहि अपनपौ दुराएँ। सब बिधि कुसल कुबेष बनाएँ।।
तेहि तें कहहि संत श्रुति टेरें। परम अकिंचन प्रिय हरि केरें।।
तुम्ह सम अधन भिखारि अगेहा। होत बिरंचि सिवहि संदेहा।।
जोसि सोसि तव चरन नमामी। मो पर कृपा करिअ अब स्वामी।।
सहज प्रीति भूपति कै देखी। आपु बिषय बिस्वास बिसेषी।।
सब प्रकार राजहि अपनाई। बोलेउ अधिक सनेह जनाई।।
सुनु सतिभाउ कहउँ महिपाला। इहाँ बसत बीते बहु काला।।
दो0-अब लगि मोहि न मिलेउ कोउ मैं न जनावउँ काहु।
लोकमान्यता अनल सम कर तप कानन दाहु।।161(क)।।
सो0-तुलसी देखि सुबेषु भूलहिं मूढ़ न चतुर नर।
सुंदर केकिहि पेखु बचन सुधा सम असन अहि।।161(ख)
