We covered up to Doha 171 of Balkand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas and learned that the accomplice has enacted part of the scheme that ex-king and his imposter friend planned (to destroy Pratapbhanu).

The demon then took form of the family priest of Pratapbhanu and lay down at the special bed meant for the priest. The King Pratapbhanu got up at wee hours in the morning and astonished at finding himself at home. He considered this to be result of supernatural powers of pseudo Muni and got out of bed quietly so that his queen does not know and went out riding on his horse towards the forests without being noticed by the city-dwellers; past mid-day, he returned back which made everyone happy and celebrations commenced in every home. When King Pratapbhanu came across the family priest, he recollected every thing involving his own objective and looked askance at him. The next three days were long days for the monarch and this kept his mind engaged at the feet of the false anchorite whom he had met in the jungle (in a manner one does remember a spiritual Guru but he did it not for a higher goal but for a mundane desire). When it was opportune the family priest approached the monarch and recounted every thing and explained future plan.

The monarch became happy, taking the priest as his Guru due to his own elusive state of mind (in the atmosphere of home and in the midst of duties required of a king Pratapbhanu should have shown some caution). The monarch then invited a hundred thousand Vipras along with their families (as per the decided plan).

We have now covered up to Doha 172 of Balkand.

The family priest (the disguised one) prepared four varieties (Charvya=which is chewed, Choshya=which is sucked,Lehya=which is licked and Peya=which is drunk) of six flavors as find mention in Vedas. His preparations though were of a different kinds but were not what they seemed, these dishes were of variety of animal meats but had been mixed with flesh of Vipras (some Vipras were killed for obtaining this flesh and mixing with other meats). The Vipras were then called to have food, they were seated after washing of their feet (as the custom goes).

Right when the king monarch was about to serve the food, a voice from skies sounded telling all the groups of Vipras to go back home forbidding them to take food disclosing that it contained the flesh of Bhusurs (gods of earth, the Vipras themselves); the Vipras took the warning seriously and the monarch’s mind went in to tizzy, he became overly concerned and speechless for what he expected to come now (his guilt made him so burdened with fear that he lost capacity to explain what had happened, a wrong step by an otherwise gentle person rebounds on his psyche in a like manner. Those who are not hardened criminals can’t carry on for long).

The Vipras then under spell of anger and without thinking of consequences cursed the king telling, “O foolish king, go, become a demon (in next birth) along with your family members.”

(The anger also takes away the power to think, of even those who are learned and wise. The Vipras should have given thought to the whole situation but they remain slightly edgy as their learning and ritualistic practices give their mind a high which is not the case with who remember the name of Lord Hari and are devoted Bhaktas. It would have been better if fact finding was done before giving the punishment and curse. The king’s fate can not be separated from that of the subjects of the kingdom so when he is being cursed the consequence of people’s sufferings also should be kept in mind.)

We have now covered up to Doha 173 of Balkand.
