We covered up to Doha 178 of Balkand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas in the last post and learned that Ravan and his brothers have been married. We also learned about a city of golden edifices which provides all comforts and which is safe being in the midst of ocean.

All Nishichars (demons who are strong in night time) who were great warriors used to stay in Lanka. These were defeated by gods in a battle badly. The gods were then directed to stay there by Indra, the head of gods and were given protection by ten million strong army of Yakshapati Kuber. When this information reached Dashmukh (Ravan), he surrounded that fortress of gods with help of great warriors and army of his own. The guards of Kuber under siege laid by Ravan’s formidable and big force consisting of warriors deemed it fit to run away and save their lives. When Ravan assessed the situation around there, he became very pleased and became free of worries. Ravan saw that Lanka was a naturally inaccessible and safe place hence preferred to make it his own capital. Ravan gave suitable homes there to every one of his people and comfortably settled them. Later Ravan attacked Kuber and forcibly took away his aerial car (an air-craft) known as ‘Pushpak’.

Later, on an occasion, Ravan sportingly lifted Mount Kailash (where his own preferred deity Lord Shiv lived), it was just for fun as if for assessing strength of his own arms. This gave him a great cause of satisfaction (that he is very strong indeed).

(Ravan proved that when a person engages his entire strength and makes an effort he can achieve great heights and even the gods help him if persistently worshiped and prayed. The worship of different gods results in getting all that is within their powers. Ravan had pleased Shiv and Brahma and got his boon from them. If the power so obtained is misutilized and others are put to trouble recklessly then the God has to descend on earth to rectify the situation, this we shall learn later in Katha.)

We have now covered up to Doha 179 of Balkand.
