We covered up to Doha 180 of Balkand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas in the last post and learned about the unmatched strength of the Ravan’s clan, his ever increasing prowess, influence, family and wealth etc.

Those who lived with Ravan in Lanka were experts at taking the desired forms and could resort to delusive ways for accomplishment of their goals. They had no respect for righteousness or had any sense of pity, not even in the least. Once Dashmukh Ravan, seated in his court, observed his large family, his sons from different wives, his own people and other people related to the family and his grand sons. It was an endless collection of crop of Nishachars (the demons). He looked at his army with natural sense of pride (of having such big army) and spoke angrily with a sense of big ego, “listen, O groups of demons, we have many inimical armies who do not fight us openly coming in front of us, they run away seeing our formidable force (therefore it becomes difficult to kill them). There is one way however by which we can see their end, listen to what I say carefully therefore; I am going to thoroughly explain it to you. You must stop all exercises undertaken by people to feed the learned Brahmins (the Dwijas), stop performance of Yagnas*, stop the rituals of oblation of substances in to sacred-fire, stop the practice of offering food and water to departed souls and other such religious practices by putting obstacles.

“This will make the gods weaker, make them go hungry and leave them bereft of any powers and eventually they will surrender before me. That will be the occasion then, to kill them or to leave them if they become agreeable to what I want of them.”

We have now covered up to Doha 181 of Balkand.

*Yagna in broader sense defines all activities that are cyclical duties for undertaken for proper conduct of every kind of activity, be it for maintaining social order, environmental order or the order of production and reproduction. This requires some sacrifice for the sake of community, nature and world at large. It ensures best possible means to all, extends overall welfare of people and environment. The gods represent all the elements of the creation and keep balance, avoid excesses and help the God in execution of his plan as per his grand design of rewarding the righteous people and punishing of wrong doers.
