We covered up to Doha 196 of Blakand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas in the last lost and learned that Lord Shiv and Kaakbhushundi have come to visit Ayodhya for enjoying the birth (of Ram) related festivities as ordinary humans so that no body recognizes them (Lord Shiv knew that Lord Hari wants to appear as in human form and does not want the fact to be disclosed to all and sundry, however, those with rightly trained mind and profound devotion will know Him in any case; He is never concealed for them).

Some time elapsed while the festivities went on and nobody felt the passage of days and nights (on account of intense surge of happiness in their hearts). One fine morning, considering that time has come for the naming of his sons, King Dashrath sent for his learned Guru, Vashishtth Muni, and after offering due regards and homage, requested him saying “O Muni, please announce the names of my sons that you have thoughtfully decided according to the special virtues of each of them.”

Muni Vashishtth then spoke to Dashrath saying, “O King, though they may have many and particularly suited names (since their virtues are many) yet I will tell what I have decided to call them with as per my own understanding. The eldest one who is ocean of bliss and provider of great amount of joy, who permeates all over, from a tiny particle to the three wolds alike, that abode of happiness will be called as Ram, this name itself will be giver of comfort to entire body of people (literal meaning of the word Ram too is likewise).

“The one who is capable of taking care of all needs of the universe for sustenance and nourishment (the second son) will be known as Bharat (literal meaning of it is likewise).”

(Bharat is very similar to Shri Ram, if Shri Ram is the God Supreme, Bharat as provider to all is therefore like Vishnu ,representing and discharging the function of the Supreme God only.)

“Shatrughan will be the one whose thought itself may destroy the enemies, the Vedas too call such a one like this (literal meaning too is same).”

(Shatrughan’s name has been given prior to Lakshan because Laksham, the passionless one, who has and represents total disinterest in all corporeal pleasure and mundane things but this quality may only be imbibed when Lobh, the greed, is totally won over or rather destroyed. We will later see Shatrughan has never fought any battle but only once did attack Mathara, the maid servant of Kaikeyi who was nothing but embodiment of Lobha, the greed which afflicted the otherwise normal mind of Kaikeyi and made her nurse a wrong idea.)

Lastly Guru Vashishth gave a well-meaning name Laxman to the one who is abode of noble characteristics (name literally means so too) and who is supporter of the universe (as he is supposed to be the avatar of Shesh Naag on whose coiled form even Lord Vishnu takes rest) besides he is very dear to Ram (naturally so because Lord finds comfort when he is lying down in lap of Sheshnaag).

(The names reveal the connection between the brothers as Bharat being the provider is Vishnu, none other than the Supreme God’s alter-ego, Ram is in reality the Lord of all gods and the Supreme God in human form. Laxman as Sheshnaag is nearly most of time letting Lord have rest and keeps him sheltered under its fangs, Sheshnaag is also supposed to be keeping the different stars and planets resting on its fangs and this way supports the entire creation, in a way taking part load of Lord Hari Himself. As we go along, this knowledge will help in better understanding the messages of Ram Katha.)

We have now covered up to Doha 197 of Balkand.
