Ramcharit Charcha CCXXXI

II Shree Guruvey Namah II

Jai Shri Ram,

II Sri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram II
II Sri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram II
II Sri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram II

We covered up to Doha 239 of Balkand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas in the last post and learned that Lakshman compared Ram’s influence and effect on His Bhaktas with that sun’s over the world’s different
creatures making them gain comfort and pleasure. Also as the rise of sun fades away the shine and glow of stars, Ram’s presence in Janakpuri is seen by him as making the asembled kings pale in to insignificance. Later Satanand arrived to meet Vishwamitra to deliver the invitation by Janak for the event in the offing. Vishwamitra then directed the princes to be ready for visiting the site.

Muni Vishwamitra added,”We would now be seeing the Swayamvar, let us see whom Ishawar (Shiv is known as Ishwar) gives the honor of marrying Sita.
(Though Swayamvar is where the bride to be selects her husband from among the eligible grooms, yet here it has been avowed by Janak that Sita would only be allowed to marry who break the formidable bow of Shiv; hence to refer to it as Swayamvar does not seem appropriate but Muni’s word have deep meaning that say that he is aware that there is only one in the universe who is competent to
marry Sita and its Ram and the term Swayamvar is fit to be used because Sita has already chosen Ram as her partner in marriage. This is what has made Muni
Vishwamitra speak of the event as Swayamvar without contradiction.)

Lakshman then uttered ,”O’ Master, only he is going to be the glorious one who will have your graceful sanction.” Muni then expressed pleasure listening to the words carrying deep meaning (he had already given blessings to Ram and Lakshman that their heart felt desire will be fulfilled) and therefore once again blessed them making all happy and satisfied.

Ram, the Gracious Lord, them moved alongwith the group of Munis to visit the arena fixed for the grand event. When people got the news of the two brothers have reaching the place prepared of the event, all of them rushed forgetting their tasks at hand including the small children, ladies and yongsters as well as the aged ones.

(All of them either had seen Ram and Lakshman already and couldn’t resist seeing them another time and some who hadn’t yet seen had heard how much attractive and charming the two brothers were and so rushed to at least have a glimpse of them and not let their routine affairs come in way. It is this kind of attitude that should always be there for the seekers of God, mention about Him by those who have had a glimpse of Him should be making them as much restless as to pay greater attention to knowing and seeing Him then the other matters.)

When Janaknoted that an unmagable crown had collected there, he summoned his trusted lieutinents and instructed them to make them all seated at proper places who then addressed with caring and soft words and directed them to the right places according to their social status, ladies in enclosures meants for them and the gentlemen elsewhere.

(Seating people according to social status should not be seen as discrimination but it is to provide all an atmosphere which does not make them uncomfortable. Notable is the fact none was turned out or given a rough treatment by the servants of the king. All had been provided for and respected. It also indicates that all are entitled to knw and see God and should be help according to their capacity and backgound, King Janak had discharged that function for his people as a realized soul.)

Bhavani Shankar Ki Jai!
Prabhu Shri Ram Ki Jai!
Sant Samaaj Ko Pranaam!
Goswami Tulsidas Ki Jai!

HariOm,

Krishna Khandelwal
