Ramcharit Charha CCXLVI

II Shree Guruvey Namah II

Jai Shri Ram,

II Sri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram II
II Sri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram II
II Sri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram II

We covered up to Doh 253 of Balkand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas in the last post and learned that Lakshman having got angry about Janak’s lamantations regading earth being without any brave people (capable of breaking the bow of Shiv) and therefore about possibility of Sita remaining unwed, in total disregard of the Ram, a descendent of Raghus, being present in the midst of the people there. Lakshman then proclaimed his own natural power of being able to lift universe, smash it; he claimed to string the bow and break it like a stalk of lotus or a mashroom adding that it was all due to the power and influence of Lord Shri Ram (meaning thereby that Ram can do much more than that, his anger was that of a Bhakta who can’t stand a statement made disregarding the God, particularly when He was present takig a form right before the eyes and Janak had already had this understanding).

When Lakshman angrily spoke like this, the elephants that balance the earth in different directions started shaking (because Lakshman as avatar of Sheshnaag on whose fangs the universes rest had become agitated with anger). This made all the people and the kings fearful (of some impending disaster) but Sita felt pleased and Janak felt ashamed. Raghupati Shri Ram, His Guru Vishwamitra and the Munis felt amused and repeatedly thrilled (Ram because His younger brother was so brave, Vishwamitra because his own disciple fearlessly told some facts and the Munis because there was some body who never kept quiet after listening to a statement that did not give weightage to presence of Lord Shri Ram).

Ram now made a gesture to quieten down Lakshman and pulled him to sit down near Himself (Ram didn’t want Lakshman to keep praising himself which is a not a right trait in brave persons).

Rishi Vishwamitra saw it to be right moment (as delay would have upset Sita, Janak and the people sitting there and no act of goodness is meaningful if not done in good time) and softly spoke with words laced with love, saying,” O Ram, get up and take off the unbearable weight of worry off Janak’s heart”.

Listening to the precise instruction of Guru, Ram bowed His head down at feet of Guru without any display of elation or depression in His heart (eleation that He now has the opportunity to have His beloved Sita as wife and depression that there was a big challenge ahead, it is such feelings that come in way of performance as whole rush of emotions distracts).

Rising up from His seat placed at a high platform and standing in His natural posture which would have shamed a young lion, Ram seemed as if the morning sun had appeared over the mountain ranges in the east. The appearance of Raghuvar Shri Ram made the lotus-like hearts of saints (i e the saints whose hearts do not have any kind of malice) surge with happiness and their eyes danced like bees in expression of that feeling (the lotus blooms at dawn and bees become active, Ram was also a memebr of sun-dynasty and had risen up dispelling the darkness of gloom).

We have now covered up to Doha 254 of Balkand.

Bhavani Shanakar Ki Jai!
Prabhu Shri Ram Ki Jai!

Krishna Khandelwal
