We covered up to Doha 294 of Balkand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas in the last post and learned that the messengers of King
Janak told King Dashrath about the coming of Muni Parasuram after the bow was broken, his spat with Lakshman and his eventual surrender before Ram. They told the glories of Ram and Lakshman and that none can claim to be like them in their own eyes. They were then offered gifts which they rightly refused. King Dashrath then went up to Guru Vashishth who instructed him to get ready for taking marriage procession after getting to know whole matter and praised King Dashrath as being a follower of Dharma and deserving to get all kinds of pleasures and assured welfare for his good deeds. Dashrath now rushed to palace while instructing for fast action in line with Muni’s instruction.

राजा सबु रनिवास बोलाई। जनक पत्रिका बाचि सुनाई।।

King Dashrath called all the ladies in his household and read out Janak’s letter to them covering other attendant details too. The queens of King Dashrath became delighted after they heard about the welcome development, The queens became emotionally upbeat and super-charged as do the pea-hens upon listening to rumbling of clouds in the sky. The elderly ladies and the Guru Mata also uttered words of blessings and good wishes. The mothers of four sons of King Dashrath became ecstatic and kept circulating the letter of King Janak between them and pressing it at their bosom to have greater satisfaction, the King had told them about the glorious accomplishment of Ram and Lakshman many times. Ultimate King Dashrath left the place saying that it was all due to Muni Vishwamitra’s grace. The queens then called the Mahidevas (the Brahmanas who are known as gods of earth) and gave them various kinds of gifts and the great Vipras of Ayodhya went back giving the blessings to Dashrath’s household.

Queens later called the beggars and the needy and bestowed gifts on them too who also wished long life to the four sons of King Dashrath (the occasions of happiness are always shared with all types of people whether at lower rung of society or at the top. When gifts are liberally showered on greed-less Brahmins and the needy, the society in general becomes happy, in today’s calculative society this practice is getting lost.)

We have now covered up to Doha 295 of Balaknd.

कहत चले पहिरें पट नाना। हरषि हने गहगहे निसाना।।

The less fortunate people of society clad in new garments kept shouting the message of welfare for the sons of Dashrath and also started to beat drums in jubilation. The citizens also came to know the good news and all over they exchanged compliments. The fourteen worlds were now upbeat that the daughter of Janak and the brave scion of the Raghu’s family were going to be married. Listening to this Shubh Katha (auspicious story) made people filled with feeling of affection and love; they started to clean and decorate the streets and the houses although Ayodhya used to be always well kept and attractive after all it was the city where Ram was born therefore it was pious and contained all kinds of welfare for people. The people wanted to return the love they received from the beloved city and they made it covered with their own efforts at decorating it. They used the flags, banners, curtains and festoons and made the markets very specially decorated. The golden urns and arches decorated with gems and filled with Durva grass, Haldi (turmeric, this is an antiseptic substance), curd and rice and with garlands placed around them, were made ready.

People made their own houses enjoyably decorated and provided, the sprinkled water on streets and painted beautiful designs on ground using many types of colored and fragrant stuff.

We have now covered up to Doha 296 of Balkand.
