We covered up to Doha 311 of Balkand in Ramcharit Manas in the last post and learned that people of Janakpur expect to have occasions later to see Ram and Lakshman whenever they will visit Janakpur after the marriage; they have also noted that Bharat and Shatrughan have accompanied King Dashrath in Barat and while Bharat resembles Ram, Shatrughan resembles Lakshman so much so that its not easy to make out who is who, they are therefore charming too like Ram and Lakshman. The citizens wish for all the four getting married in Janakpur itself, such is their love for the four brothers. They consider the two kings as having an unsurpassed collection of good deeds in life on account of which they have such extra-ordinary and divinely beautiful children and expect that the creator will reward them fully on that account.

The people of Janakpur kept praying for fulfillment of desires related to Ram and Sita and the other brothers of Shri Ram and became very heartily joyful on that account. The noble princes who had come to attend Sita’s Swayambar as participants but had stayed over now saw the other brothers of Shri Ram and were delighted to meet them. They went back to their living quarters praising Ram and discussing His name and fame that had become widely spread (after the event). This is how some days passed during which the citizens and members of bridegroom’s party rejoiced together and kept enjoying each other’s company.

The auspicious day of the marriage, which people were keenly waiting for arrived; it was beginning of the winter season, this period was covered by month of Margshirsha, a very pleasant month. Brahma, the creator, took in to account all the aspects i e planets, date, Nakshtra (connected with lunar cycle), conjunction of stars and the day of the week etc were duly considered and a propitious time was worked out by Brahma and he sent Muni Narada to convey the same to the both parties in the marriage, surprisingly the Jyotishis (astrologers) of King Janak had already worked out the same. When people learned that what Brahma determined the Jyotishis also could determine, in this light they thought what Brahma writes fate of people but keeps it concealed, the same becomes known to the Jyotishis hence they are no less then Brahma himself.

The Vipras considered that Godhuli Vela (the hour of dusk, when the cows return home after their day spent in the pasture their hoofs falling on the dusty track raise clouds of dust in atmosphere, it gives a very special aura to the evening when the day and night are meeting each other, its considered an auspicious time of the day and good for marriage of two souls) as being the most sacred for the performance of ritual of marriage and informed Janak too about its being the most propitious and agreeable time.

Janak was now impatient and asked his family Purohit (priest) what is there to wait now, the suitable time has arrived. Muni Satanand then summoned the ministers; they collected all the sacred stuff required and brought it. Conch-Shells and the drums were sounded together and the Kalash (an urn filled with water and other sacred things on top of its covering, prepared before any Puja or ritual) was readied as token of auspicious beginning. Well-dressed and beautiful looking ladies who have their husbands alive started to sing songs on one side and on the other side the accomplished Vipras began to chant the Vedic hymns. In this manner all of them went to call the Barat at their living quarters. They were all ready for the evening and Dashrath and his people together made the assembly of people in the city of gods look inferior. When they got the call to step out towards the place where marriage ceremony was to take place, the beating of drums became frenzied. King Dashrath took permission of his own Guru and performed a bit of rituals in line with his own family’s tradition and then began to move along with the Munis and saints in his party.

The fortune and the grandeur of Dashrath’s party was looked up on by the Brahma and the other gods with a bit of envy and they felt that their own existence was meaningless but still were all praise for Dashrath, their thousands of mouths uttering his glory.

(The gods were envious of Dashrath because as gods they never had the good fortune of participating in the marriage of their own Lord and Master Shri Ram but Dashrath had that good fortune because he had Shri Ram as his son who was now going to be married. The gods are the creation of God Supreme but here the Supreme God is happy to be son of Dashrath by taking avatar in human form.)
