We covered up to Doha 318 of Balkand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas in the last post and learned that the ladies in Janakpur were very decently dressed and very well adorned with ornaments and other kind of make up applied to their bodies. The goddesses also joined them in disguise and due to frenzied merry making they were not recognized. All of the ladies present there were thoroughly enjoying themselves by looking at Ram as bridegroom but mother of Sita had some unworldly experiences when she looked at Shri Ram’s beautiful form.

Wiping her eyes as it was an auspicious occasion, the mother of Sita Queen Sunayana started to do Parichhan (i e examine Ram as bridegroom for her daughter Shri Ram) by turning lighted lamp around Him with heart filled with great joy (as she found Ram as more then perfect for her daughter). She performed all that in enjoined in Vedas and also that was the family’s tradition without neglecting any thing she performed all of that very sincerely. The sounds of five types (Ved-dhwani, Vandidhwani, Jayadhwani, Shankhdhwani and Dundubhidawani) and singing of auspicious songs went on while the carpets were being laid (to welcome the marriage party of Shri Ram). It was now time for Queen Sunayana to do Aarati and she did it and offered Arghya (reverentially offer water) to Shri Ram; Shri Ram then proceeded towards the pavilion. Dashrath and rest of the people in his party also settled themselves, King Dashrath’s elegance and grace on that occasion surpassed that of monarchs of different worlds.

The gods were busy showering flowers and the Mahisurs (Brahmins) were doing Shantipatth (singing of certain Vedic hymns to invoke gods for keeping the atmosphere and surroundings peaceful). The uproarious atmosphere made it difficult to listen and catch word of anybody including that of one’s own. Shri Ram was then seated and made comfortable while all kinds of activities went on.

Doing Aarati (this signifies as being done to keep the evil and harm away by waving lamp around)) the ladies of Janak’s household drew pleasure of watching the bridegroom from close range; they gave away to needy various kinds of clothes and ornament after taking them around Shri Ram to ward off evil and sang festive songs. This was watched by superior gods like Brahma who were disguised as Brahmins with great interest (Brahma was amazed that it was him who determined the destiny of all and here were people who even wanted to guide the destiny of even the Supreme God); they found themselves lucky to have an occasion to watch the sun like personality which enabled the lotus of sun-dynasty bloom fully.

Hosts of servants like the barbers,torch-bearers, singers and dancers received the offering given to them with a grateful heart and gave their blessing silently to Shri Ram while bowing down before him.

We have now covered up to Doha 319 of Balkand.

Bhavani Shankar Ki Jai!
Prabhu Shri Ram Ki Jai!
Sant Samaj Ko Pranam!
Goswami Tulsidas Ki Jai!
