We covered up to Doha 325 of Balkand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas in the last post and learned that Ram and Sita went round the fire burning in the Homa-Kunda to complete the rites related to marriage, all enjoyed this captivating sight and Janak enjoyed it most. Shri Ram then put Sindur on the forehead of Sita and Muni Vashishttha then directed the just wedded Ram and Sita to sit on a single seat as bride and bridegroom, King Dashrath and brothers of Ram felt very pleased looking at Shri Ram and Sita and all happily proclaimed that Ram and Sita were now married. Later Bharat was married to Mandvi, Urmila to Lakshman and Shrutikirti to Shatrughan and all the newly wedded couples set side by side under the same pavilion. All the four couples seemed to represent the four types of lines of efforts to achieve the four ends of life by humans, Dashrath now had this accomplished in practical shape.

All the princes were married in the similar fashion and as per the prescribed practice as was the case with Shri Ram’s marriage. Sumptuous dowry was given by King Janak and the whole pavilion overflowed with golden ornaments and other things which were studded with precious stones. Lot of shawls/blankets, clothes made of costly and exotic material were given. The dowry included horses, elephants and chariots/cars. Cows like Kaamdhenu which were duly adorned with ornaments were also given and servants and maid-servants were made to go along to take care. Countless other kind of things were given that can’t be described in detail, only those might have an idea who practically had occasion to examine them. The various heads of principalities felt envious looking at the richness of dowry. King Dashrath also accepted all that was given with great pleasure and started to give away what ever was demanded by needy there itself, only what was left after liberal distribution was taken to the place of stay. Now was the time when King Janak addressed politely and with due honor and respect all the Baraties with folded hands.

King Janak gave honor and respect to all the members of marriage party from side of bridegroom in a very humble manner and praising them all the while; he worshiped the groups of great Munis with an excessive show of love for them and bowed down his head before them while keeping his palms joined together and invoked gods and uttered words to the effect that it can never be possible to satisfy an ocean’s thirst with water carried by joining two hands, the gods and Sadhus (saints) are so vastly honorable that enough can not be done for them, it’s kind of them that they only demand just the purity of sentiment to become pleased.

King Janak, joined by his brothers, came near King Dashrath with his hands folded in reverence and spoke with his innate nobility the words which were pleasing to heart and were laced with love, “O King, because of our relationship with you only we too now have higher status in many ways and we along with our kingdom offer ourselves to be considered as servant without any obligation on your part.”

Janak further said,” the girls from our family may well be taken as hand-maidens but they deserve ever courteous treatment in your household. Please condone my acts of offence/arrogance and it was foolhardy on my part to have called you to come.” In return the ornament like in the Sun-dynasty, King Dashrath greatly honored his relation King Janak and it is beyond mention what kind of love and courtesy both of them had for each other in their hearts.

When King Dashrath proceeded towards his living quarters, the gods rained flowers; Jay-dhuni (cries of victory), Ved-dhuni (Vedic chanting) and the sound of kettledrums filled the city and the skies when the entourage of Dashrath went back from site of marriage and every one rejoiced. The ladies sang auspicious songs and taking command from Muni Vashishtth they took the bride and bridegroom to the interior of Janak’s household (for worship of Kul-Devi and Kul-Devta).

Sita repeatedly looked at Shri Rama and every time felt constrained and Her heart never found satisfaction; Her eyes were so active as to defeat the movements of a beautiful fish when she thirstily enters water.

We have now covered Doha 326 of Balkand and also this rests with the 11th rest for a 30 day recital.

Bhavani Shankar Ki Jai!
Shri Sitaramabhyam Namah!
Sant Samaj Ko Pranam!
Goswami Tulsidas Ki Jai!

HariOm.
