बाजहिं बाजने बिबिध बिधाना। पुर प्रमोदु नहिं जाइ बखाना।।
भरत आगमनु सकल मनावहिं। आवहुँ बेगि नयन फलु पावहिं।।
हाट बाट घर गलीं अथाई। कहहिं परसपर लोग लोगाई।।
कालि लगन भलि केतिक बारा। पूजिहि बिधि अभिलाषु हमारा।।
कनक सिंघासन सीय समेता। बैठहिं रामु होइ चित चेता।।
सकल कहहिं कब होइहि काली। बिघन मनावहिं देव कुचाली।।
तिन्हहि सोहाइ न अवध बधावा। चोरहि चंदिनि राति न भावा।।
सारद बोलि बिनय सुर करहीं। बारहिं बार पाय लै परहीं।।
दो0-बिपति हमारि बिलोकि बड़ि मातु करिअ सोइ आजु।
रामु जाहिं बन राजु तजि होइ सकल सुरकाजु।।11।।

We covered up to Doha 11 of Ayodhya Kand in Rmacharit Manas of Tulsidas in the last post and learned that while the whole city of Ayodhya was happily celebrating and people were eagerly awaiting for accomplishment of their heart-felt desire, the gods were upset at the prospect of Shri Ram’s coronation. They prayed before Goddess Saraswati to find a way whereby Shri Ram would go to jungles rather than become the king of Ayodhya (here we can very well see that the Supreme God, that Shri Ram is actually is, is not interfering in the affairs of Ayodhya or at the level of gods. Events are taking place without His guidance or even His prior knowledge. This is how cycle of worlds go on, it is how the neutrality of God remains while people do as per their basic nature).

सुनि सुर बिनय ठाढ़ि पछिताती। भइउँ सरोज बिपिन हिमराती।।
देखि देव पुनि कहहिं निहोरी। मातु तोहि नहिं थोरिउ खोरी।।
बिसमय हरष रहित रघुराऊ। तुम्ह जानहु सब राम प्रभाऊ।।
जीव करम बस सुख दुख भागी। जाइअ अवध देव हित लागी।।
बार बार गहि चरन सँकोचौ। चली बिचारि बिबुध मति पोची।।
ऊँच निवासु नीचि करतूती। देखि न सकहिं पराइ बिभूती।।
आगिल काजु बिचारि बहोरी। करहहिं चाह कुसल कबि मोरी।।
हरषि हृदयँ दसरथ पुर आई। जनु ग्रह दसा दुसह दुखदाई।।
दो0-नामु मंथरा मंदमति चेरी कैकेइ केरि।
अजस पेटारी ताहि करि गई गिरा मति फेरि।।12।।

Goddess Saraswati listened to the prayer of gods and stood with a sense of remorse that she was going to be like the cold night for lotuses i e she thought she would be acting to upset the applecart in Ayodhya. When the gods saw Saraswati in somber mood, they beseeched her by saying, “she needed not worry for she was not going to get bad-name or be faulted for it. The superior among the Raghus is never inclined to be dejected or rejoice in any manner regarding any matter (they indicated that Almighty God practices equanimity in all situations). More than any one else it is you who knows the real nature of Shri Ram (Saraswati being the goddess of learning and knowledge). The Jeevas (the living beings, here the humans as beings) get whatever becomes ordained as good or bad, pleasure or pain according to their actions (actions that become potent on account of motives and interests behind the actions). You must go to Avadh simply for the sake the gods (who have been suffering on account of excesses of demons and wrong-doers).”

The gods grabbed the feet of Saraswati and ultimately she went ahead with reluctance but thinking about the Vibudhs (the gods who had special intellect) for their having skewed and selfish understanding (always thinking to protect their high status). She thought that these gods lived in higher realms but were inclined to do lowly acts. They, by their very nature, can’t stand the welfare and well-being of the others (this time of the citizens of Ayodhya). Saraswati then concentrated on the task ahead and expected that the Kavis (the enlightened historians and the enlightened poets) would understand her predicament and make known the real reason behind what she was going to do and keep her interest in mind. Now relieved of the burden of bad thoughts, Saraswati happily visited the city ruled by King Dashrath, making her way in like the stars and planets move to form a combination that’s brings unbearable pain (this signifies how powerless one becomes when the stars become unfavorable and suffers worst kind of fates helplessly on account of the positioning of stars in which he has no role. It must therefore also be understood that while events may take place which are unfavorable but the real suffering comes because of one’s own mind-set, the inclinations and preferences. We will see later how some remain unruffled and some suffer immensely for the same set of events).

Reaching Ayodhya, Goddess Saraswati selected the personal maid-servant of Queen Kaikeyi, who was known as Manthara (meaning one who moves at slow speed) and who was dull-witted or rather had rather bad kind of temperament, to accomplish what she intended to do for the sake of gods. The goddess of speech Saraswati used her power and corrupted the mind of Manthara, making her a bundle of tarnished image or container of ill-repute.
