We covered up to Doha 16 of Ayodhya Kand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas in the last post and learned that Manthara has begun to make further inroad in to the mind of Kaikeyi noticing existence of a trace of doubt and inclination to find something where there is none. She condemns herself first, then shows herself without any interest in what she is going to suggest and proceeds to place herself as only a well-wisher of Kaikeyi and lastly wants to be excused for what she said by way of posing as an humble person who could be trusted without any harm coming if confidential matters are discussed. She had known that she was transgressing the limits expected of her and hence wanted to overcome that weakness by putting up herself as a worthy confidant. Queen Kaikeyi simply got in to the trap because she had a mental weakness of not trusting anybody without a test, Manthara showed her that any test will be cleared by her with flying colors, the other weakness of her was one that is common to most women i e of skepticism and fear. These weaknesses let Kaikeyi be victim of scheming by gods who have some special functions to discharge in the world for the people as representative of Supreme Lord but they are still prone to suffer on account of demons who gain power through some Tapa and disturb the natural order thereby weakening the gods themselves.

Now the queen inquired of Manthara again and again assuring her of her changed status of a person holding her own confidence; she was now almost under hypnotic state after listening to words of Manthara in the same fashion as the deer behaves when music is played by its hunter (deer have natural attraction for certain kind of music). The providence was now guiding her intellect, Manthara, her attendant was now pleased to have queen under her own control. Manthara went ahead saying, “you want to know the reality but I am worried myself; you have already called me someone who wants to create rift among the members of family.”

In this way gaining further confidence of Kaikeyi, the disaster-inviting Manthara for the whole of Ayodhya, like the seven and half year long period of Saturn in one’s life which ensures trouble in smoothly running life when that combination happens in zodiac, spoke, “you said that Ram and Sita are too dear to you O Queen, i know that Ram is dear to you for sure (she did not confirm that Sita too is as much dear to queen as she still was not tested by Kaikeyi hence could be kept in a different category) but those old days are now over. The time makes people change from being friend to foe, from loving to hating (pointing out that Ram was now married to Sita and may well come under influence from Sita). Don’t you know that sun nourishes the lotus plant but when there is no water the same sun burns it down. The other wife of your husband Kaushalya wants to uproot you entirely from the soil of Ayodhya (this was really an extreme statement but Manthara made it for effect) but you have chance to spoil her planned moves by taking suitable steps like fencing a field to save it from being uprooted.

“You have confidence in the king, you take him for granted and under your influence but the fact is that he has very callous heart but shows decent and loving behavior outwardly while you have a simple and gullible temperament (Manthara plays up the fact that the king did not consult Kaikeyi before announcement of giving charge of kingdom to Ram).”

We have now covered up to Doha 17 of Ayodhya Kand.
