We covered up to Doha 17 of Ayodhya Kand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas in the last post and learned that Manthara kept influencing the mind of Kaikeyi and told her that she was aware of her love for Ram and it was alright earlier but over time those who have been favorable become against when the circumstances change. She told the queen that her husband’s other wife Kaushalya is conspiring against her; King Dashrath is not any more on her side while she may still think that he is under her control due her being his preferred wife. Manthara also told that he has some thing else in heart and behaves differently outwardly, while she (Kaikeyi) may have not noticed it due to her own simple and straight character.

Manthara kept hounding the queen saying, “Ram’s mother Kaushalya is a seriously cunning player, she just found an opportunity and has turned the tide in her own favor. First she saw to it that Bharat goes to his maternal grand-father’s place for a visit. Kaushalya thinks that while the other co-wife Sumitra serves her finely and remains under her thumb, only you are the proud one on account of the preference of the master of them all (i e Dashrath). You are the one she is bothered about but her cunningness and wise-ways stop her from letting you be aware of her bitterness towards you (Manthara told so because so far Kaikeyi hadn’t noticed any bitterness from the side of Kaushalya). Her competing nature does not let her digest the fact that king has special regard and love for you. But scheming artfully she has gained favor of the king now and forced him to declare the date of coronation of Ram as king. You have been right in so far as Ram gets to become the king, it is in the heart of people and is desirable for me too (Manthara knew that Ram was dear to all and also to Kaikeyi hence she played out making the case without challenging this fact) but when I think of the repercussion thereof I get disturbed no end. I would much prefer that the gods of luck give back to her what she has been conniving for you to have (i e the fate of being subservient to co-wives).”

In many different ways, slyly invented and constructed, Manthara kept targeting kaikeyi and related to her many famous stories of co-wives tormenting each other so that Kaileyi gets worked up enough.

We have now covered up to Doha 18 of Ayodhya Kand.
