We covered up to Doha 18 of Ayodhya Kand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas in the last post and learned that Manthara is now building up a whole scenario before Kaikeyi where the very strength that she identifies with is going to come under threat i e her being the one who is loved most by the husband, the master of three ladies. Along with it Manthara is trying to instill and provoke the element of jealousy viz a viz the peers against whom a competitive edge was maintained so far. Manthara planted the seed of doubt in heart of Kaikeyi against her beloved husband too. We can notice here that one weakness leads to another and then whole personality of a person sways.

The queen now was totally convinced in her heart about what Manthara was saying (even though a person of strong personality like Kaikeyi could not have been influenced so easily) but it seems to be fated for her. The queen so influenced began to ask Manthara further exacting an oath once again what was at the bottom of it all. Manthara then replied saying, “what do you want to know, haven’t you still learned it; what’s in ones’ interest is known even to the beasts and the birds (they instinctively know but you a queen don’t). The preparations have been on for about a fortnight and you have come to know of it from me only today (Manthara now was emboldened to employ blatant lies, the coronation was announced only a day in advance i e that day itself, when the ground is prepared any thing can be planted).”

Manthara further said,”i have my sustenance through you under your regime hence if i speak the truth before you i can’t be faulted by any one for it (here she refused to honor the king even and placed the queen singularly at top) however if i speak something concocted or untrue there is the Almighty there to punish me (she posed herself to be a God-fearing person who usually are not prone to tell lies). In the circumstance of Ram getting anointed as king, the seed of your misfortune and troubles will have been sown by the creator of us all (she meant that the situation was then beyond any redemption or correction because it will then be the will of God).

“i am ready to emphasize that its the writing on the wall that you, a lady of substance and honor, are now just a fly in the ointment. The only course open to you to still live in the palace will be to serve others along with your son (Manthara placed before Kaikeyi a future so bleak that she could never ever digest while she was reminded of her status of honor and decent living).”

Lastly Manthara capped it all by repeating the famous story in epics about a pair of co-wives called Kadru and Vinita suggesting a parallel situation where Bharat was going to suffer imprisonment and Lakshman was going to be made the lieutenant of Ram (i e son of Kaushalya and son of Sumitra were going to rule leaving Kaikeyi’s own son, here Manthara challenged Kaikeyi’s motherhood bringing in question the welfare of her own son, an indigestible proposition for any mother).”

We have now covered up to Doha 19 of Ayodhya Kand.
