We covered up to Doha 19 of Ayodhya Kand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas in the last post and learned that inquisitive queen kept imploring Manthara for some secret that she was not aware of but in fact was falling prey to Manthara and was reinforcing her design only forfeiting her own capacity to think and analyse. Manthara suggested to Kaikeyi that the coronation of Ram will see beginning of her bad times, she would have to be at mercy of Kaushalya even for her maintenance and stay in the palace and would have to serve along with her son Bharat for getting even this much if at all. Further more what is possible is that Bharat is put in jail and Lakshman (son of Sumitra) becomes the second in command besides Ram and she herself is put to unknown difficulties.

Those were very harsh words that Manthara told Kaikeyi, listening to such words daughter of Kaikeya (so mentioned by Tulsidas because Kaikeyi had failed to identify herself completely with Ayodhya and was maintaining a separateness in some measure even today, its the case with very many married woman and they suffer for it) became stunned and could not speak out. Her body perspired profusely and she was now shaking like stalk of a weak plant; noticing this Manthara who had a deformed back, took her tongue in teeth wondering if she had hit the nail right on head. Later she got back to saying many different stories of deceit and foul play to Kaikeyi but also asked her to be patient and keep heart. Now Manthara had turned the tide completely and Kaikeyi was made to like Mathara’s weird ways bringing her own misfortune in to play; Kaikeyi was now appreciating a vulture mistaking it to be a swan.

Now somewhat reassured Kaikeyi said, “O Manthaara, you been right, my right eye is continuously fluttering for sometime, I have been having nightmares almost daily but I failed to tell you about this only on account of my dumbness. O Friend (Kaikeyi now addressed Manthara as friend expressing her sole dependence on her because all others in the family were painted by Manthara as acting against the interest of herself, she was now in state of delusion), I am really of simple nature and can’t make out who are friends and who are foes. I have not consciously acted or had any ill-will against anyone till today, what has been my sin then that I am being subjected to this harsh reality and worst of fate all at once.”

We have now covered up to Doha 20 of Ayodhya Kand.
