We covered up to Doha 25 of Ayodhya Kand  in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas in the last post and learned that King Dashrath found it difficult to move legs when he learned of Kaikeyi’s bad mood and that she was occupying the room mostly used by distraught member of household. Powerful though the king was but he felt weak because of his passionate love for Kaikeyi. It is not uncommon that strong people can’t withstand the onslaught of the cupid in their weaker moments. When Dashrath saw Kaikeyi ill-clad and the ornaments thrown about discarded from her body, he tried to placate Kaikeyi by asking sofly as what was troubling her.  Kaikeyi reacted like a hurt snake ready to strike when she was touched by Dashrath but Dashrath still looked at it as just an act of playfulness in the sphere of erotic love. King kept addressing her as a woman with beautiful face, eyes, voice and gait etc and inquired repeatedly as what was the cause of her anguish (king dared not call her as Sumati, a one with good intellect, Dashrath was so truthful in his life that even for making Kaikeyi happy he couldn’t this term because he had noticed that she now had no balance of mind).

King went further ahead showing his concern for Kaikeyi and said, “O my dear, who has done a bad turn to you, who thinks that he has two heads (because one I am going to cut off for his act of offending you), who is now wanted by the god of death. Just tell me for I can make a pauper a king, I am also ready to expel a satrap out of my kingdom. Even a member of the body of gods would be eliminated by me if he happens to be your enemy, what then is the worry about worm like men and women. O my special one, you are well aware of my nature and my leanings, I wish to keep looking at your face like Chakor does viz a viz moon in the sky. O my darling, you have total control and right over my sons, all that I possess, whole of my family members, all citizens of my kingdom even over my life. O talented one, i swear in Name of Ram if i have told you anything evasively or with a view to cheat you.

“You are welcome to demand with pleasure whatever is dear to your heart but at least put on the ornament back on your lovely body. You must look at the appropriateness of time (in a way king wanted to indicate that Ram’s coronation was round the corner, he also expected that she was now aware and was some how upset with this development); you must, my dear lady, now speedily shed this inappropriate dressing style.”

As soon as Kaikeyi listened to king taking the biggest oath that he could take, she weighed options in mind and the dumb-witted then got up smilingly and began to decorate herself with ornaments; it looked as if a huntress was preparing a trap noticing a prey around.”

(When the cupid strikes the mind becomes numb, the king was now committing to do anything just for the pleasure of one, he now was declaring his total control and command on all people including the family members while was himself being controlled by a certain member of his own family. Clearly he was going wrong in his assessment and was committing overly but was also mindful of Ram. Whatever king proclaimed was going to happen i e a king was going to be sent in to jungles, someone to live as a recluse but rule over Ayodhya, none of the gods had tried to influence Kaikeyi directly hence were saved, he wanted to know whose life was needed by the god of death and it was his own life, he staked his life and will lose it too. King said that all the citizens and the family were under command of Kaikeyi and they would really have to bear worst times at her instance. We will see these paradoxical situations emerging as the Shri Ram Katha unfolds further.)

We have now covered up to Doha 26 of Ayodhya Kand.
