We covered up to Doha 59 of Ayodhya Kand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas in the last post and learned that after giving her blessings Kaushalya looked at Sita fondly who was sitting quietly since the time she came and could easily make what was going on in her heart. Kaushalya thought that this delicate and beautiful daughter-in-law of hers who happens to be the beloved daughter of a great king too and had been looked after by her with maximum attention and care ever since her marriage to Shri Ram, seems to be interested to go along with Shri Ram. Kaushalya thought that in the forest the conditions will be very harsh and scary hence it might not be right for her to go there. She told Ram to weigh the pros and cons himself let his opinion be known.

बन हित कोल किरात किसोरी। रचीं बिरंचि बिषय सुख भोरी।।

Kaushalya further told Shri Ram, “The daughters of aborigines and the hunters might have been created by the god of creation who remain unaware of material comforts (because they have not lived a comfortable life in cities) besides having a naturally strong body and tough character might not find it difficult to live in forest; also those women who decide to do Tapa under unwelcome circumstances in the forest might with stand the hardships of forest solely on account of their firm resolve and conscious decision to discard the comforts of life, but Sita’s case is different.

“It is my biggest concern that how would Sita live well in the jungles, she even gets scared when sees a money’s picture. A small swan like bird (which is pure, its snow-white color represents purity) may well be happy to move around in the midst of lotus like flowers that grow in and around divine lake (Mansarovar) but to consider it equally interested in a muddy pool usually found in other forests might not be sensible. In this light whatever you decide will be convincingly conveyed to Sita by me.”

The mother then further said by way of an assuranace to Ram, “If Sita would prefer to stay back in palace then it will be a great help to me personally.”

Ram listened to mother’s love drenched words of wisdom and concern and then replied to her very discreetly for giving her consolation and comfort in every way. Later Shri Ram began to directly address Sita for explaining what were the impediments and benefits of her living in forest with him with a balanced approach (he never wanted to load his personal preference while talking to her).

We have now covered up to Doha 60 of Ayodhya Kand, this also coincides with the 14th rest for a month long recital of Ramayana.

Firstly Ram was a bit reluctant to directly speak to His consort Sita in presence of an elder like His own mother but then he considered that it was need of the hour hence this should not come in way of a meaningful communication between her and Sita and began speaking to her,”O Princess, pay heed to my advice and take it as it is without thinking that it has been told for any concealed purpose. If you really feel concerned for welfare of both of us then I would say that you stay at home here, and considering it as my order as husband you must engage yourself in service of your mother-in-law (here Ram said this with authority signifying the fact that if at all wives have to be ordered it may be just for the sake of parents and not in any other respect because their service is not something that can be subjected to any diluted attention).”

Shri Ram continued saying, “O Gracious One, it will be good in every way if you stay in the palace with my mother because there is no other duty which outweighs the one that is towards the parents-in-law and their service should be done with fullest devotion. Whenever my mother would be upset after remembering me and due to her intense love for me then you may say to her some old stories in your soft voice and make her understand that such times come and go (as similar situations in those stories will convince her that outcome will not be adverse in spite of times which presently seem turbulent). O Lovely Faced One, what I have told you is truly reflection of my nature and it is simply for the help and benefit of my mother that I want you to stay back.”

Then Shri Ram gave some references from the scriptures and old literature like that of Galav and Nahush who had suffered on account of their stubborn attitude and unfair demands that were not in accordance with Niti or Dharma and said to Sita that a chance had presented itself for her get all the benefits flowing out of observing Dharma that has sanction of Guru and mention in the Shastras and Vedas without undergoing rigors.”

We have now covered up to Doha 61 of Ayodhya Kand.
