नर अहार रजनीचर चरहीं। कपट बेष बिधि कोटिक करहीं।।
लागइ अति पहार कर पानी। बिपिन बिपति नहिं जाइ बखानी।।
ब्याल कराल बिहग बन घोरा। निसिचर निकर नारि नर चोरा।।
डरपहिं धीर गहन सुधि आएँ। मृगलोचनि तुम्ह भीरु सुभाएँ।।
हंसगवनि तुम्ह नहिं बन जोगू। सुनि अपजसु मोहि देइहि लोगू।।
मानस सलिल सुधाँ प्रतिपाली। जिअइ कि लवन पयोधि मराली।।
नव रसाल बन बिहरनसीला। सोह कि कोकिल बिपिन करीला।।
रहहु भवन अस हृदयँ बिचारी। चंदबदनि दुखु कानन भारी।।
दो0-सहज सुह्द गुर स्वामि सिख जो न करइ सिर मानि।।
सो पछिताइ अघाइ उर अवसि होइ हित हानि।।63।।

We covered up to Doha 63 of Ayodhya kand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas and learned that Shri Ram first reassured Sita that it would not be long, the days would pass quickly while He would be away and that he was going just for keeping honor of the word and promise of father. He further told Sita about the hardships in detail that which would be faced by her in the forests and that she was not capable to withstand them. Shri Ram also told Sita that advice of master (husband) and teacher (Guru) should be reverentially followed, if advice of those who have natural interest in ones welfare and well-being is neglected it only results in troubles, pain and suffering.

सुनि मृदु बचन मनोहर पिय के। लोचन ललित भरे जल सिय के।।
सीतल सिख दाहक भइ कैंसें। चकइहि सरद चंद निसि जैंसें।।
उतरु न आव बिकल बैदेही। तजन चहत सुचि स्वामि सनेही।।
बरबस रोकि बिलोचन बारी। धरि धीरजु उर अवनिकुमारी।।
लागि सासु पग कह कर जोरी। छमबि देबि बड़ि अबिनय मोरी।।
दीन्हि प्रानपति मोहि सिख सोई। जेहि बिधि मोर परम हित होई।।
मैं पुनि समुझि दीखि मन माहीं। पिय बियोग सम दुखु जग नाहीं।।
दो0- प्राननाथ करुनायतन सुंदर सुखद सुजान।
तुम्ह बिनु रघुकुल कुमुद बिधु सुरपुर नरक समान।।64।।

When Sita listened to sweet and convincing advice of her beloved husband her, lovely eyes got filled with tears. The cool and well thought advice of Shri Ram disturbed her all the more like the Chakor bird gets restless in the cool nights of post rainy season but before winters when moon’s rays fall on earth while the skies are clear. Vaidehi (daughter of Videh i e Janak, who is not guided by bodily comforts, here Vaidehi i e Sita is also not guided by the discomforts and threats to body in the jungles) found no answer to be given to Shri Ram in light of what He said and became distraught, she thought may be the pious and loving master wants to leave her. She made an effort to stop the tears from falling down; Avanikumari (Sita is also known as Avanikumari meaning daughter of earth because Janak had got her while ploughing earth placed in an urn below the surface; earth is known to have quality of endless patience, being daughter of Sita naturally has that quality) kept her patience and bowed down at feet of mother-in-law. She then spoke with hands folded and said, ” Devi Maa, please excuse for my brazenness that I dare to speak in front of you. I know that the Lord of my life has given me that very advice that would be keeping my interests safe ultimately but I have peeped in to my own heart and found that there is no grief as heavy as to be separated from husband.”

Sita then addressed Shri Ram saying, “O Master of my life, O the abode of mercy, you ensure all kinds of pleasures for me, you are handsome and thoroughly knowledgeable but without you, the moon like one for the lily like pure and blemishless family of Raghus, even the city of gods i e the heavens too would be like a hell, an abhorrent and repulsive place, for me.”

We have now covered up to Doha 64 of Ayodhya Kand.

मातु पिता भगिनी प्रिय भाई। प्रिय परिवारु सुह्रद समुदाiII
सासु ससुर गुर सजन सहाई। सुत सुंदर सुसील सुखदाई।।
जहँ लगि नाथ नेह अरु नाते। पिय बिनु तियहि तरनिहु ते ताते।।
तनु धनु धामु धरनि पुर राजू। पति बिहीन सबु सोक समाजू।।
भोग रोगसम भूषन भारू। जम जातना सरिस संसारू।।
प्राननाथ तुम्ह बिनु जग माहीं। मो कहुँ सुखद कतहुँ कछु नाहीं।।
जिय बिनु देह नदी बिनु बारी। तैसिअ नाथ पुरुष बिनु नारी।।
नाथ सकल सुख साथ तुम्हारें। सरद बिमल बिधु बदनु निहारें।।
दो0-खग मृग परिजन नगरु बनु बलकल बिमल दुकूल।
नाथ साथ सुरसदन सम परनसाल सुख मूल।।65।।

Sita went on saying, “The parents, the sisters, the brothers and rest of the family and well-wishers as also the in-laws, the teacher, the other relatives, helpers/friends etc and even the cultured and handsome sons who please and care for comfort of mother become strangers; affectionate bonding and relations with them all convert in to heat generating connection and become difficult to maintain and hold, more than like it is to deal with the sun like hot object, for a woman who is without her husband.

“The body, the wealth, the living quarter i e home, the city and lands where one lives and the administrative machinery there, all of them collectively become reason for sorrowful existence as no one understands and help a woman who is without his master i e the husband. For her the consumption or enjoyment of any kind becomes a disease and putting on ornaments is only like carrying dead weight. The whole world becomes ready to give the same kind of tormenting and rough treatment that is received in hell. There is simply nothing without your being with me, O Lord of my life, that would be pleasurable for me. I will only be like a body without soul, like a river that has no water for a woman without her man is like that only; on the other hand if you are with me then all pleasures will be available to me on account of my being able to have a look at your face which is as pure and bright as the moon in autumn month.

“The beast and the birds will be my kinsman and family members, the forest will be my town, the bark of trees will form my clothing and the hut made of leaves will be like a divine palace with you around me, all of this will be very pleasure giving and comfort giving.”

(Before giving Sita the reasons for staying back, Shri Ram had made it clear what he wanted and even directed her to follow it, only afterwards he gave her the idea of conditions in forest. This reflects his truthfulness and no attempt at giving Sita the impression that he only was stopping her for her own safety and comfort. Sita like wise did not contradicts the principle that first duty of a married lady is towards serving the parents-in-law and neither objected to Shri Ram giving her such command but simply gave Him glimpse in to her emotional make up which would make it difficult for her to remain alive without her husband. She later also truthfully said that all types of relationships fail to understand a woman’s needs and neither they can fulfill those needs. She in fact established the rule that angle of safety and comfort should not be the reason for staying away from husband who is going to live in hard conditions, rather a wife should be ready at all times to live in all types of conditions with her husband. This kind of mutual trust and respect between husband and wife forms the base for stable marriages. The modern society has to learn it from Sita and Ram.)
