जौ नहिं फिरहिं धीर दोउ भाई। सत्यसंध दृढ़ब्रत रघुराई।।
तौ तुम्ह बिनय करेहु कर जोरी। फेरिअ प्रभु मिथिलेसकिसोरी।।
जब सिय कानन देखि डेराई। कहेहु मोरि सिख अवसरु पाई।।
सासु ससुर अस कहेउ सँदेसू। पुत्रि फिरिअ बन बहुत कलेसू।।
पितृगृह कबहुँ कबहुँ ससुरारी। रहेहु जहाँ रुचि होइ तुम्हारी।।
एहि बिधि करेहु उपाय कदंबा। फिरइ त होइ प्रान अवलंबा।।
नाहिं त मोर मरनु परिनामा। कछु न बसाइ भएँ बिधि बामा।।
अस कहि मुरुछि परा महि राऊ। रामु लखनु सिय आनि देखाऊ।।
दो0–पाइ रजायसु नाइ सिरु रथु अति बेग बनाइ।
गयउ जहाँ बाहेर नगर सीय सहित दोउ भाइ।।82।।

We covered up to Doha 82 of Ayodhya Kand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas in the last post and learned that right after Ram, Lakshman and Sita left Ayodhya after meeting the king and the people of Ayodhya, the king wanted his minister and friend to go along with them and bring them back after taking them to forest and showing around. The king said that his life might still be saved if the daughter of King Janak returns back even if due to their resolve the two brothers refuse due to their resolve. He asked him to convey his message and try other possible means for Sita’s return, if not, he said he would surely die and then became unconscious but repeatedly calling out to be shown Ram, Lakshman and Sita when they come back. The minister then promptly went to meet the Sita and two brothers on their way outside the city.

तब सुमंत्र नृप बचन सुनाए। करि बिनती रथ रामु चढ़ाए।।
चढ़ि रथ सीय सहित दोउ भाई। चले हृदयँ अवधहि सिरु नाई।।
चलत रामु लखि अवध अनाथा। बिकल लोग सब लागे साथा।।
कृपासिंधु बहुबिधि समुझावहिं। फिरहिं प्रेम बस पुनि फिरि आवहिं।।
लागति अवध भयावनि भारी। मानहुँ कालराति अँधिआरी।।
घोर जंतु सम पुर नर नारी। डरपहिं एकहि एक निहारी।।
घर मसान परिजन जनु भूता। सुत हित मीत मनहुँ जमदूता।।
बागन्ह बिटप बेलि कुम्हिलाहीं। सरित सरोवर देखि न जाहीं।।
दो0-हय गय कोटिन्ह केलिमृग पुरपसु चातक मोर।
पिक रथांग सुक सारिका सारस हंस चकोर।।83।।

Sumant reached near Shri Ram and conveyed the message of the king, only after he politely pressed Shri Ram agreed to get on to the chariot for the journey ahead. When the Sita and the two brothers moved up on the chariot, they resumed their journey and mentally paid respect to the Avadh, the region they were going to leave behind. The restless people, finding Awadh now master-less, followed Shri Ram closely behind him (considering that with Him they will remain protected). Shri Ram, the ocean of mercy, then tried to convince them in many ways that staying back would be in order (and that He in fact is never separated from them at any time or in any eventuality, its only their narrow vision that sees Him parted from themselves); for once the people returned back but out of their excessive love for Shri Ram, they came back again (their love for Shri Ram’s beautiful and benign physical form had become the greatest attraction), to them the Avadh (without Shri Ram) looked very dreadful, for them it was now the descend of death like dark night over Ayodhya. Every one appeared to each other as dreaded wild animals and trembled out of fear whenever looked at each other. For the people of Ayodhya their homes had become like the cremation ground and the members of family like ghosts (away from God, such condition is reached by the society that none has faith in the other), even sons, friends and well-wishers seemed to them like messengers of death. Even the trees and creepers in the gardens became wilted and condition of the river and the ponds became such that one didn’t like to turn eyes to look at them (though these water sources were full with life giving resource, such was the desperation). The horses, elephants, domesticated animals and the animals kept for pleasure and play, the birds like Chatak, peacock and other like them were too not happy anymore (Shri Ram’s departure from Ayodhya upset them too).

We have now covered up to Doha 83 of Ayodhya Kand.

राम बियोग बिकल सब ठाढ़े। जहँ तहँ मनहुँ चित्र लिखि काढ़े।।
नगरु सफल बनु गहबर भारी। खग मृग बिपुल सकल नर नारी।।
बिधि कैकेई किरातिनि कीन्ही। जेंहि दव दुसह दसहुँ दिसि दीन्ही।।
सहि न सके रघुबर बिरहागी। चले लोग सब ब्याकुल भागी।।
सबहिं बिचार कीन्ह मन माहीं। राम लखन सिय बिनु सुखु नाहीं।।
जहाँ रामु तहँ सबुइ समाजू। बिनु रघुबीर अवध नहिं काजू।।
चले साथ अस मंत्रु दृढ़ाई। सुर दुर्लभ सुख सदन बिहाई।।
राम चरन पंकज प्रिय जिन्हही। बिषय भोग बस करहिं कि तिन्हही।।
दो0-बालक बृद्ध बिहाइ गृँह लगे लोग सब साथ।
तमसा तीर निवासु किय प्रथम दिवस रघुनाथ।।84।।

The separation from Shri Ram worked so that every one of these animals, men and women became stunned and unmoving as if painted in a picture, due to their love for Him (as Shri Ram also loved them immensely as beings of His own creation). The whole city of Ayodhya had become like a dense forest, the citizens as also the animals and birds had become like preys and the Kaikeyi the huntress as per the plan of the creator himself and she had lighted the scorching fire on all ten directions (on all sides including side above and below leaving no way out), it was this fire of separation from Ram they were unable to bear and hence ran helter-skelter under duress. All of the living beings thought that without Shri Ram they would never be comfortable because where there is Shri Ram there is every kind of provision (they felt that it was Shri Ram who had been their provider and this feeling they got even without knowing the reality of Shri Ram as being the Supreme God but felt it subconsciously i e the reality of God at subconscious level remains known to all and the Avtars of God give a glimse in to it to all, the wise and the ordinary alike, the wise then become established in equanimity but ordinary want to remain in the company of God in form due to the attraction so experienced); all of them felt that it was worthless for them to stay in Ayodhya when Shri Ram was not there, with this resolve they left their homes which were more than the abodes of gods (because the gods don’t have the luxury to be physically near the Avtars of God). It was just that who had liking for the feet of Shri Ram would naturally not be inclined to be the slave of comforts and material pleasures.

Only the old, infirm and the children remained at home all the rest went along with Shri Ram; The Lord of Raghus Shri Ram reached near the banks of river Tamas at the end of first day’s journey and decided to rest their for the night.
