We covered up to Doha 84 of Ayodhya Kand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas in the last post and learned that all the citizens of Ayodhya followed Shri Ram and stood in the out-skirts of city in very sad mood ready to follow Him in to the jungles but Shri Ram tried to make them understand that it was not in their own interest to follow Him any further and rather they should stay back at home. They returned once but came back under force of their love for Shri Ram, Lakshman and Sita, they had become uninterested in comforts of city and sensual pleasures; later Shri Ram terminated journey for the night’s rest at the banks of river Tamasa.

Raghupati Shri Ram found the subjects of Ayodhya under spell of for Himself, His merciful heart felt it painful (that they are suffering on that account). Lord Raghunath (Shri Ram, the master of Raghus), very kind by nature could empathize fast with others sensing their troubles hence He again spoke in soft love drenched words to explain to people in ways what was right for them. He gave many sermons and religious references but people refused to go back, making His efforts yield nothing. Shri Ram was not able to extricate Himself from love for them all and His polite behavior towards them hence He found Himself in a bind. The people later fell asleep, they had been tired now besides being sad, there the Lord’s Maya also played a role in numbing their minds. When it was well past mid-night, Shri Ram gently confided in the minister, “O Taat (my father-like), you may now so drive the chariot that its lead is difficult to trace, there is no other way that these people will go back.”

Shri Ram, Lakshman and Sita then got up on the car and bowed down at feet of Bhagwaan Shiv (i e firming up their own belief that they were doing right) and Sumnatra, the minister, then began driving the chariot in crisscross manner to conceal the direction in which they were going.

(The minister was under order of the king to show them around in the forests and bring them back hence agreed readily.)

When it dawn, the people got up and a commotion could be heard as all shouted that Raghunath Shri Ram had left them; they tried to find the direction in which they might have gone but failed and ran helter-skelter in all directions. It was a scene like when the ship of merchants gets drowned in high sees and they find no way to retrieve it hence become distraught. All of them began to give sermons to each other (repeated what they had been told by Shri Ram earlier) and concluded in the end that Shri Ram had left them only to relieve them of their own troubles. They then began to think lowly of themselves comparing themselves with fishes which could never live without water while they had not died even when their life-like Shri Ram was no more with them (water is considered to be life itself as without it no life can be sustained, here they always had thought that without Shri Ram they could never remain alive but were still living hence this thought of being inferior than fishes).

The people of Ayodhya lamented that while the creator had destined them to be without their loved one then at least he could have given them death as was now being desired by them. Agonizingly disturbed in this way they reached Ayodhya but repenting badly and very regretfully. The pinch of separation felt by them is not describable but still all remained alive only in the hope of seeing Shri Ram at the end of the term of forest-living.

The citizens of Ayodhya took to disciplined living and religious practices like fasting etc only for the sake of being able to meet and see Shri Ram again, they were miserable in the same manner as the Charavaak birds and the lotus flowers react up on setting of the sun (Shri Ram of sun-race was like sun for them and was now out of sight, they took to religious living only to earn Punyas to later have reward in form of meeting Shri Ram again. The religious practices should be followed only with this understanding that these are means to an end i e to know and realize God).

Bhavani Shankar Ki Jai!
Shri Jankivallabho Vijayatey!
Sant Samaj Ko Pranam!
Goswami Tulsidas Ki Jai!

HariOm,
Krishna Khandelwal
