We covered up to Doha 86 of Ayodhya Kand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas in the last post and learned that when Shri Ram reached the banks of river Tamasa, He sttled there for the night’s rest and late in the night he urged Sumantra to leave the place without leaving a trace so that the people do not follow him any further because He thought that they were suffering unduly on his account. When in the morning people found that Shri Ram had left them, they felt like fishes out of water. They thought that the creator should have let them die if they were destined to be separated from Shri Ram; with heavy hearts they reached back in Ayodhya.

The two brothers and Sita later reached Shrinberpur along with Sumantra, the minister. Shri Ram saw that they had reached near the holy river Ganga and got down. He then prostrated in reverence with great pleasure. Lakshman, Sita and Sumantra did the same and all of them felt very pleased and blessed. Looking at the wavy flow of Ganga intently Shri Ram explained them, “Ganga is at the root of all kinds of felicity, frolic and well-being, it provides all thrills and pleasures and removes all hardships and pains.”

Shri Ram also related many stories and gave various references about Ganga while kept watching the majestic flow of it with great concentration. Shri Ram told His beloved Sita, younger brother Lakshman and Sumant, the minister, about the immense glory of the divine river. Later Shri Ram bathed merrily in the waters of Ganga and felt refreshed, He also drank the holy water of the river and felt delighted in heart and mind. It is another matter that who removes all kinds of burden, of mind and body, just when remembered, that Shri Ram was feeling tired and fatigued is strange but in His avatar in human form it is natural for this to happen to Him; Shri Ram, the most revered in the family which originated from sun, who as Brahman is essentially and purely the concentration of existence, consciousness and bliss (Sat, Chit and Anand) is acting and behaving in a manner which the ordinary people also can follow and practice, He is that bridge for crossing the ocean of the world of living and being (i e Bhavsagar, crossing of which is really a very tough task for the Jivas and therefore Shri Ram kindly paves the way for all).

We have now covered up to Doha 86 of Ayodhya Kand.

When Guha named satrap of a tribe known as Nishadas got to know of coming of Shri Ram in Shringberpur, he called his near and dear ones and his friends. Guha then asked them to pick baskets full of fruits and vegetables and all together went to meet Shri Ram with great joy in their hearts. Guha first prostrated and then placed the presents before Shri Ram; Guha looked at Shri Ram overwhelmed with great love for Him. Raghupati Shri Ram noted his natural and unselfish love for Himself and it bound Him too (Shri Ram always felt a binding obligation and equal love for someone who showed a natural and undemanding love toward Him, this is very much the reflection of His attitude towatds unselfish devotees as the Supreme lord of universe); then Shri Ram asked about Guha’s well-being and got Him seated near Himself.

Guha then replied humbly, “O Master, it ever ensures my welfare when I have occasion to look at your lotus feet, I have become more endowed and lucky now among people. I know and consider that all land, wealth, even home etc are yours, I am just a low-born servant of yours together with my whole family, O The Provider. It will be very graceful of You if you step in to my city and bless me, let every one feel envious of me.”

(Guha talked to Shri Ram knowing Him to be a prince of Ayodhya but also reflected the depth of his understanding about Shri Ram’s divinity because had it been just an honor given to a prince Shri Ram would not have got affected to that extent because that would have been just a selfish and worldly transaction.)

Shri Ram replied with proper understanding of the inner feeling of Guha and said, “O Friend, what you have spoken is all true and you indeed are very knowledgeable but my father’s command is different; my father has asked me to live in forest for fourteen years and live and eat like Munis with attendant discipline hence it would not be in order to go to and live in a village.”

(We see here that Shri Ram also talked with Guha at both levels, He let it be known to Guha that he was bound by rules of the world and His divinity would not be finding a free expression and that He knew the depth of Guha’s understanding. The Guha was not someone initiated by a spiritual master but was self taught hence he had no one to point out to him that Shri Ram was really the Supreme God. In this world a Guru is needed to make one finally unite with the Supreme God even though every one has occasion to see Him in some form or the other.)

We have now covered up to Doha 88 of Ayodhya Kand.
