We covered up to Doha 90 of Ayodhya Kand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas in the last post and learned that Shri Ram retired for the night after meals consisting of fruits and roots and Lakshman massaged His legs and feet till He fell asleep on the bed of leaves on the ground. Lakshman then moved and sat away in pose of readiness for security, Guha placed his trusted guards around the place and himself joined Lakshman fully alert. Guha then became remorseful watching Shri Ram sleeping on bed of leaves on earth while His father’s palace was well appointed and well built for ensuring all kinds of comforts.

Guha further said to Lakshman, “Available there were all sorts of coverings, clothes and other needed stuff for a very comfortable sleep, the linen so soft and sleek as surf on stirred milk, wide and long enough and of good design and texture. Shri Ram and Sita have been accustomed to sleep in such comfort (as described earlier). They have such an aura while sleeping that makes Rati and Manoj (cupid) look inferior; the very same Ram and Sita now have to sleep on the earthen platform covered by dried leaves without sheets though very tired, this is a very disturbing sight to look at. The parents, the family members, the citizens of Ayodhya, friends and well trained & cultured maids and servants, all of them used to tend and aptly serve Shri Ram but here the same Shri Ram is having to sleep directly on earth. Vaidehi Sita whose father Janak has influence that extends far and wide, her father-in-law, King Dashrath, happens to be the friend of the Indra, the chief of gods. The great Raghu Ramchandra happens to be her husband, she also has to sleep on ground, it is rightly said that there is none who doesn’t suffer on account of the lord of destiny’s designs. How else it can be justified that Sita and Raghuveer Shri Ram should live in forest other than that ‘Karma’ is at the core of every thing that happens (Guha meant that this is said but he was surprised that in their case the ‘Karma’ can’t have been wrong hence he wondered all the more but when we recall the reasons of Almighty God taking the Ramavatar we can appreciate that Lord accepted the rule of ‘Karma’ even for Himself, it is however immaterial because He remains ever untouched when it plays out).

“The daughter of King of Kaikeya is really of low wit that she enacted in such staunchly mischievous way that she gave troubles right at a time when when they should have been enjoying life (being young and recently married. Kaikeyi as mother should have ensured for them all kinds of pleasure but she did the reverse).”

We have now covered up to Doha 91 0f Ayodhya Kand.

Guha lastly said to Lakshman, “The wrong-minded Kaikeyi has acted like a sharp instrument to fell the tree of the family of sun and made whole of the world afflicted of the darkness of ensuing troubles (Guha metaphorically mentioned this that Kaikeyi managed to stop the cycle of sun-rise and hence the world naturally will find it difficult to survive such a phase of life; Guha again demonstrated that He knew beyond what can ordinarily seen).”

Guha, the Nishad, then fell deeply in to a remorseful stage after looking at Ram and Sita lying on ground to sleep. Lakshman then began to console Guha saying some words laced with neat extraction of Gyaan (the real knowledge), Vairagya (dispassion) and Bhakti (devotion).

Lakshman said to Guha, “O Brother, no one really is responsible for pleasure or suffering of another, it is all the result of one’s own ‘Karma’ that one is subjected to all that happens (here he subtly mentions that while one’s own mental framework is responsible to enjoy or despise a given situation and the Bhava (intent) behind the ‘Karma’ makes it potential).

“What we get or what we get deprived of, what we enjoy as good or suffer as bad, whatever good, bad or neutral kind of fate we come across is nothing but confusion and at times a trap (some times favorable circumstance convert in to worse situations and vice versa , even smooth running times get an unexpected turn as in instant case of Ayodhyawasis).

“Birth, death or other complexities of living in the world, the riches and troubles, the intricacies of ‘Karma’, and vagaries of time, the land, the home, the wealth and place of birth or living and the family, even heaven & hell (experienced here or expected in life after) all these phenomena and aspects, when looked in to deeply, rightly analysed by self or explained by wise will make it clear that it is all rooted in delusive understanding which doesn’t let reality be seen due to leanings and preferences, none of these thing have a meaning where the absolute truth, essence of being, ultimate reality are the objective and are sought.

“Like a person may become a king from being a beggar or a person without possession may become a monarch in a dream but when he wakes up there is nothing as loss or gain similarly the business of the world should be known to be (the reality is what it is, immaterial of what we see in the manifested world which is like a dream only).”

(Lakshman had this depth of knowledge and therefore His resolve was to only serve His brother Shri Ram, the Supreme God and he therefore never ever considered himself duty-bound towards any one else in terms of worldly relation. The dispassionate only discharge such worldly duties that allow them to remain in service of God, remain one with Him.)

We have now covered up to Doha 92 of Ayodhya Kand.
