We covered up to Doha 130 of Ayodhya Kand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas in the last post and learned that Muni Valmiki explained to Shri Ram who were those worthy people in whose heart He must stay. Here Muni is telling all what are the qualities that would endear one to Shri Ram or how can one achieve that kind of purity in heart that will make Shri Ram’s form shine in their hearts never to leave it. Muni also beseeching Shri Ram on behalf of different categories of Bhaktas (devotees) to be graceful enough to make their hearts His home.

Muni Valmiki further recounts qualities of those whose hearts deserve to be home for Shri Ram and says, “The right and excellent home for Your stay is the heart of those who strive to correct the fault in their own character or behavior and always identify the good qualities in others and imbibe them; who don’t mind suffering for the sake of Vipras and the cows; who dexterously follow the right path and policy and set it as a good example for others in the world.

“I wish You to stay along with Sita in the hearts of those who think that any virtues in them are due to Your grace but the faults are his own and need to be dropped and who depend entirely on You (for getting strength for the removal of such faults because the faults can’t be dropped just on own strength as otherwise such faults would not have been acquired in the first place); who love and respect the Ram Bhaktas i e Your own devotees.

“Who don’t have their ego bolstered on account of their high-caste or lineage, their wealth or their own Dharam (i e the religious superiority or superiority in religious order) and their being famous and praised; who are always ready to leave their loving families and their comfortable homes and all other belongings and positions at any time when these thing come in conflict with Your remaining in their hearts i e when these things are no more conducive for living a life devoted to You and are left without a second thought), the hearts of such people should be lived in by You.

“For whom the heaven and hell or even the state of liberation carries no attraction so long as they are able to picture You keeping the bow and arrow as their protector and who by deed, by speech and by thought only remain Your followers and devotees, O Ram, make their hearts Your resting place.

“Lastly, who do not ask for anything else other than a natural love in their hearts for You, You must, O Ram, remain in their hearts at all times because that in particular are like Your own home.”

(Here we saw Muni Valmiki go at length while suggesting to Shri Ram His possible homes; this he did to convey to people how Ram can be made to dwell in hearts and also pleaded with Ram to not ignore people with such traits and shower His graces on them. In this manner we all precisely know what matters in the path of devotion that would never fail one; this removes confusions in our mind about our duties and practices and give holistic idea about dos and don’ts.)

We have now covered up to Doha 131 Ayodhya Kand.

Great Muni Valmiki in this manner showed Shri Ram the various possible homes where Shri Ram would not feel awkward and uncomfortable, in very pleasing words and Shri Ram also liked those homes as being appealing to Himself i e endorsed hearts of them all whom Muni referred, as being his homes. Muni Valmiki then told Shri Ram, “O the leader of the Raghu’s family, I would now tell You the living place that would be comfortable and safe considering the delicacy of the time. You may get settled on Mountain Chitrakoot where You will find all conveniences nearby. Its beautiful and likable hill which is surrounded by beautiful forest in which elephants, lions, other animals and birds etc roam about i e its a pristine place unspoiled by human activity. There a stream which is pious and which finds reference in Puranas too, it was brought on earth by strength of the Tapa done by the consort of Attri Muni. It is known as Mandakini and is tributary to Ganga, that Ganga which destroys all sins like an infant being killed by mighty witch. There many great Munis like Attri and others live and do their Japa, Tapa and Yoga etc by straining their bodies and by making it strong in the process. If You proceed in that direction You will reward these Munis for leading disciplined and strenuous lives as well as You will impart a high status to that great hill itself.”

Thus the great Muni Valmiki sang praises of Chitrakoot and its abounding glories before Shri Ram and later Shri Ram, brother Lakshman and Sita took bath after reaching the esteemed river called Mandakini.

We have now covered up to Doha 132 of Ayodhya Kand.
