We covered up to Doha 144 of Ayodhya Kand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas in the last post and learned that Guha found Sumantra very sad and almost hysteric on account of absence of Shri Ram and that he was not in a position to go back himself driving the chariot to Ayodhya and hence he first placated him by saying some stories and then sent a few of his men along with Sumantra. Sumantra while on way back thought that why he was still living when Shri Ram was no more with him, this he considered as his gravest failure and that he had missed the opportunity of demonstrating his love for Shri Ram.

Mininster Sumantra’s condition matched that of a woman belonging to a high family who is gentle and wise too and who is devoted to her husband treating him as her Lord and master but some how is so ill-fated that she has to live apart from him and therefore suffered, in a similar manner his heart also burned badly.

Because of tears in his eyes his sight became affected, his faculty of hearing got affected too and due to worrisome thoughts his intellect also became dulled, his lips dried and tongue stiffened but his life-breath still not leave because the limited period of time that Shri Ram was going to be away worked as the door keeping it closed inside the heart region.

Sumantra now was discolored to such an extent that it was difficult to look at him without getting disturbed, he looked like some one who had murdered his own mother and father. He was now so low-spirited and downcast on account of the loss of his face (at not being able to take back Shri Ram) and also of inability to keep company of Shri Ram. He was now thinking like a sinner that only the hell remained the place to go to for him (he mentally now equated Ayodhya no better than hell without Shri Ram there).

Sumantra was not able to utter a word and was very regretful and sorry at heart thinking that what was now left for him to see back in Ayodhya. He thought that who so ever would see the chariot without Shri Ram in it would despise and stay shy of looking at him. He thought when people would come rushing towards him to inquire about Shri Ram with heavy hearts, he would have to be answering however much his own heart would be constricted and weighed down.

(Sumantra’s condition tells us the condition of a true devotee who on account of some circumstances is forced to withdraw from continuously remembering and serving the Lord. Sita and Lakshman had conveyed to Shri Ram that if left behind they would not be able to live and the Lord had therefore taken them along but Sumantra was to carry the message of Shri Ram for King Dashrath and serve Ayodhya as per direction of Shri Ram only hence was not taken along by Shri Ram and neither could he lose his life but suffered immensely. Even if its a trouble for the devotee, he does not deviate from following the dictate of his Lord or from the prescribed duty so long as he is part of society, it is only after one has shunned the world and has taken Sanyas that he on occasions can defy even his own Lord and be with Him.)

We have now covered up to Doha 145 of Aodhya Kand.

Bhavani Shankar Ki Jai!
Shri Jankivallabho Vijayatey!
Sant Samaj Ko pranam!
Goswami Tulsidas Ki Jai!
