जिमि कुलीन तिय साधु सयानी। पतिदेवता करम मन बानी।।
रहै करम बस परिहरि नाहू। सचिव हृदयँ तिमि दारुन दाहु।।
लोचन सजल डीठि भइ थोरी। सुनइ न श्रवन बिकल मति भोरी।।
सूखहिं अधर लागि मुहँ लाटी। जिउ न जाइ उर अवधि कपाटी।।
बिबरन भयउ न जाइ निहारी। मारेसि मनहुँ पिता महतारी।।
हानि गलानि बिपुल मन ब्यापी। जमपुर पंथ सोच जिमि पापी।।
बचनु न आव हृदयँ पछिताई। अवध काह मैं देखब जाई।।
राम रहित रथ देखिहि जोई। सकुचिहि मोहि बिलोकत सोई।।
दो0–धाइ पूँछिहहिं मोहि जब बिकल नगर नर नारि।
उतरु देब मैं सबहि तब हृदयँ बज्रु बैठारि।।145।।

We covered up to Doha 145 of Ayodhya Kand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas in the last post and learned that while on way back to Ayodhya, Sumantra, the minister, was very remorseful and thought very poor of himself at not being able to take Shri Ram back as per the direction of the king as also for not having demonstrated his love for Shri Ram. He was very nervous and had lost all his faculties due to excess of grief. He even thought that it was for no purpose that he was returning to Ayodhya without Shri Ram and also that he would have very difficult time facing the people of Ayodhya who would loath to even turn their glance in his direction and that he hardly had any answers in response to their queries regarding Shri Ram.
पुछिहहिं दीन दुखित सब माता। कहब काह मैं तिन्हहि बिधाता।।
पूछिहि जबहिं लखन महतारी। कहिहउँ कवन सँदेस सुखारी।।
राम जननि जब आइहि धाई। सुमिरि बच्छु जिमि धेनु लवाई।।
पूँछत उतरु देब मैं तेही। गे बनु राम लखनु बैदेही।।
जोइ पूँछिहि तेहि ऊतरु देबा।जाइ अवध अब यहु सुखु लेबा।।
पूँछिहि जबहिं राउ दुख दीना। जिवनु जासु रघुनाथ अधीना।।
देहउँ उतरु कौनु मुहु लाई। आयउँ कुसल कुअँर पहुँचाई।।
सुनत लखन सिय राम सँदेसू। तृन जिमि तनु परिहरिहि नरेसू।।
दो0–ह्रदउ न बिदरेउ पंक जिमि बिछुरत प्रीतमु नीरु।।
जानत हौं मोहि दीन्ह बिधि यहु जातना सरीरु।।146।।

Sumantra’s trail of thought continued and he thought, “O lord, what am I going to offer as an answer when the poor mothers who are already suffering too much will be asking different questions. When mother of Lakshman will ask about the sons and Sita, what message from children I am going to deliver that would give her relief. When Mother Kaushlya will come running towards me like a mother rushing to meet her calf and not finding her son Shri Ram she would want to know where her children were and I will be given a cold answer that Ram, lakshman and Sita have gone deeper in to the jungles. Is this the answer that I will give to all who ask me with some lurking hope; am I going to draw this kind of pleasure in Ayodhya.

“The king who is very weak already because of the unbearable grief will also want to know; his life itself hinges on Raghinath Shri Ram’s return to Ayodhya. How am I going to confront him while telling him that I had safely taken Him in to jungles and  left Him there. When I will deliver the messages of Laksman, of Sita and of Shri Ram (as I am bound to give), the king of people of Ayodhya will lose life leaving the body like a straw (i e he will neither value a life without Shri Ram and also will not find trouble in dying as the trouble of living without Shri Ram will be much greater for him).

“My heart did not crack like mud does upon losing its softness providing water content though Shri Ram, my beloved, who really is responsible for keeping it going has left it. I now well understand that creator Brahma has given me this body as an instrument of suffering.”

(In a way Sumantra was propounding a basic philosophy and that is that the mud consists of the same five substances of which the body consists of but the spark of life is provided by the Supreme Lord i e Shri Ram, so when Shri Ram had gone the heart should have stopped functioning too rendering body useless but that did not happen. The Brahma gives body to us for purpose of fulfilling the residue of past desires (and worldly desires even when fulfilled end in to suffering) and the spark of life is provided by the same Supreme Lord with whom permanent union is required to stop having further bodies, so when Shri Ram has gone but the body is alive it must be for suffering. When there are no more desires left and the only desire that remains is to unite with the Lord at the time of soul leaving the body the cycle of having one body after the other is stopped.)

We have now covered up to Doha 146 of Ayodhya Kand.
