We covered up to Doha 166 of Ayodhya Kand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas in the last post and learned that Kaushalya told Bharat that when Shri Ram left for the woods he looked cheerful showing no signs of remorse or sadness in his heart; Sita went with Him because she could not have lived without Him and Lakshman did not agree to stay back in Ayodhya hence also went with Shri Ram. Mother Kaushalya then further said that Shri Ram met every one respectfully while leaving but she herself could not go with with them neither could send her soul with them. She repentantly said that in spite of this happening right before her eyes her breathing did not stop and that it was really some thing not understandable that son be like Ram and mother like Kaushalya; definitely her heart is like a stone i e without a feeling while the king knew it well how to live and die. Listening to Kaushalya talk like this Bharat and the ladies in the palace lost heart and began to lament and cry.

The two brothers, Bharat and Shatrughan, who were bemoaning and lamenting feeling greatly distressed were brought close to bosom by mother Kaushalya; she tried to comfort and quieten Bharat in many ways telling words of wisdom and after regaining his composure Bharat also tried to placate and console mothers by making relevant references picking them out of Puranas and Vedas (Bharat was well versed in spheres of religion and philosophy having been a student of great Guru Vashittha).

Afterwards, pure of heart, above any kind of scheming Bharat told in simple words keeping both his palms together addressing Kaushalya and other elderly ladies present there, “The sins like killing own parents or the progeny, sins like setting fire to place where cows are kept or to the village where Brahmanas, the gods of earth, reside may apply to me if I have had any consent or wish in what has happened in Ayodhya. I stand to bear punishment for the sins of killing women or the innocent children and also for the sins like killing lord of land or a friend by giving poison if there is any hand of mine in what has happened in my absence in Ayodhya, Vidhata (creator) may even punish me for any other kinds of wrong-doings etc attributing those to me if its me behind all that happened here, O Mother.

“I even commit to be subjected to the same treatment by God which is meted out to those who stop worshiping Lord Hari and Lord Shiv and engage in gory rituals to please the ghosts.”

(Bharat had a big obligation to pacify and provide some solace to the ladies who had become very fearful in such situation, they could not have understood matters logically in such circumstances or even otherwise. In this light Bharat could have only addressed them with emotional touch. He knew that they loved him and if they were convinced about his own non-involvement in what happened then they could have an assurance that the new guardian i e Bharat could be trusted, otherwise what had happened had his own mother’s hand and he could not easily distance himself from her. Otherwise such break-down can’t be considered normal for a king to be or at least by some who will have to discharge duties of king even if not by becoming a king, Bharat was no ordinary person, he was thorough in state-craft and profound in behavioral science.)

We have now covered up to Doha 167 of Ayodhya Kand.

Bhavani Shankar ki Jai!
