बिलपहिं बिकल भरत दोउ भाई। कौसल्याँ लिए हृदयँ लगाई।। भाँति अनेक भरतु समुझाए। कहि बिबेकमय बचन सुनाए।। भरतहुँ मातु सकल समुझाईं। कहि पुरान श्रुति कथा सुहाईं।। छल बिहीन सुचि सरल सुबानी। बोले भरत जोरि जुग पानी।। जे अघ मातु पिता सुत मारें। गाइ गोठ महिसुर पुर जारें।। जे अघ तिय बालक बध कीन्हें। मीत महीपति माहुर दीन्हें।। जे पातक उपपातक अहहीं। करम बचन मन भव कबि कहहीं।। ते पातक मोहि होहुँ बिधाता। जौं यहु होइ मोर मत माता।। दो0-जे परिहरि हरि हर चरन भजहिं भूतगन घोर। तेहि कइ गति मोहि देउ बिधि जौं जननी मत मोर।।167।।

We covered up to Doha 167 of Ayodhya Kand in Racharit Manas of Tulsidas in the last post and learned that Bharat and Shantrughan were distressed and crying badly when mother Kaushalya brought them close to her bosom; she then began to give some thoughtful advice trying to console Bharat in many ways. Bharat too told many a stories from old scriptures in process of giving relief to mothers. Afterwards folding his hands Bharat, a guileless person with a pure heart, told mothers in simple and straight manner that he would not mind to be given punishment for grisly crimes like killing parents or children, or burning down cow-shelters and villages inhabited by Brahmanas if he is found to be having any hand in recent events in Ayodhya. He said he would be willing to undergo punishment that is meant for murderers of babies and women or for poisoning of a friend or the king if what happened had his consent in any way. God may ascribe to him any big or small sin if committed practically or just remained at level of thought or speech according to the wise people, if even a trace of his role is found in all that happened. He even wished to be treated like a one who shuns to worship Lord Hari or Lord Shiv and propitiates ghosts or daemons in case of his involvement in it.

बेचहिं बेदु धरमु दुहि लेहीं। पिसुन पराय पाप कहि देहीं।। कपटी कुटिल कलहप्रिय क्रोधी। बेद बिदूषक बिस्व बिरोधी।। लोभी लंपट लोलुपचारा। जे ताकहिं परधनु परदारा।। पावौं मैं तिन्ह के गति घोरा। जौं जननी यहु संमत मोरा।। जे नहिं साधुसंग अनुरागे। परमारथ पथ बिमुख अभागे।। जे न भजहिं हरि नरतनु पाई। जिन्हहि न हरि हर सुजसु सोहाई।। तजि श्रुतिपंथु बाम पथ चलहीं। बंचक बिरचि बेष जगु छलहीं।। तिन्ह कै गति मोहि संकर देऊ। जननी जौं यहु जानौं भेऊ।। दो0-मातु भरत के बचन सुनि साँचे सरल सुभायँ। कहति राम प्रिय तात तुम्ह सदा बचन मन कायँ।।168।।

Bharat kept mentioning other types of sins and said, ” O Mother, if I have any kind of consent behind it then I stand to suffer horrible times like those who sell Vedas or profit out of religious functions, who betray others by telling their faulty deeds, who make fun of Vedas and are generally opposed to people of the world, who are greedy, lewd and remain engaged in plundering and thievery, who covet wealth or women of others. Lord Shankar may make me suffer the fate of those, if I am privy to what is behind all that that has happened, who do not remain happy among the Sadhus or enjoy their company, who have decided to turn back midway while on way leading to salvation being ill-fated (those who stop their search for truth mid-way are the ones who first lose faith, Lord Shiv represents faith and therefore Bharat mentioned Lord Shankar to be handling fate of such people), who do not worship Lord Hari in spite of having human body (which is a great reward in itself and is rare happening in the journey of Jeevas), who do not rejoice when they hear the glories of Lord Hari and of Lord Shiv, who leave the path suggested by Vedas and follow contrarian path and who are deceptors and assume different forms to defraud and cheat.” Mother Kaushalya listened to words of Bharat which were without any complex logic but were straightly coming out of his heart and told him, “O Son you have always been dear to Shri Ram, you have always endeared Him by your speech, thought and action.”

(Bharat recounted all sorts of crimes and sins which extend from heinous and moral to religious and spiritual, which shows that he knew what is wrong and right. He came forward to being subjected to any kind of probe, testing or inquiry scope of which could be extended to any sphere of crime or sin. This is exemplary behavior as otherwise we see influential people ducking it if there is any finger raised for fear that inquiry may falsely implicate them but who are simple of heart do not have such considerations.)
