बैखानस सोइ सोचै जोगु। तपु बिहाइ जेहि भावइ भोगू।।
सोचिअ पिसुन अकारन क्रोधी। जननि जनक गुर बंधु बिरोधी।।
सब बिधि सोचिअ पर अपकारी। निज तनु पोषक निरदय भारी।।
सोचनीय सबहि बिधि सोई। जो न छाड़ि छलु हरि जन होई।।
सोचनीय नहिं कोसलराऊ। भुवन चारिदस प्रगट प्रभाऊ।।
भयउ न अहइ न अब होनिहारा। भूप भरत जस पिता तुम्हारा।।
बिधि हरि हरु सुरपति दिसिनाथा। बरनहिं सब दसरथ गुन गाथा।।
दो0-कहहु तात केहि भाँति कोउ करिहि बड़ाई तासु।
राम लखन तुम्ह सत्रुहन सरिस सुअन सुचि जासु।।173।।

We covered up to Doha 173 of Ayodhya Kand of Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas in the last post and learned that Muni Vashishtth gave examples of those persons who neglect their inherent duties like a seeker deviating from his path for sake of enjoyment, like a backbiter who mistakenly gets angry and harms his own parents, teacher and brothers, like a one who is self-serving only and doesn’t mind crushing others for it and like him who is not God-oriented but is deceitful and that while such people might be thought as poor and pitiable but person like King Dashrath can never be who had his influence spread all over. Muni further said, “Your father like king has never been nor would be, he has been praised for his virtues by the trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh and also by Indra and Digpals, who else then can rightly praise him particularly because he has pious and illustrious sons like Shri Ram, Lakshman, Shatrughan and yourself.

सब प्रकार भूपति बड़भागी। बादि बिषादु करिअ तेहि लागी।।
यहु सुनि समुझि सोचु परिहरहू। सिर धरि राज रजायसु करहू।।
राँय राजपदु तुम्ह कहुँ दीन्हा। पिता बचनु फुर चाहिअ कीन्हा।।
तजे रामु जेहिं बचनहि लागी। तनु परिहरेउ राम बिरहागी।।
नृपहि बचन प्रिय नहिं प्रिय प्राना। करहु तात पितु बचन प्रवाना।।
करहु सीस धरि भूप रजाई। हइ तुम्ह कहँ सब भाँति भलाई।।
परसुराम पितु अग्या राखी। मारी मातु लोक सब साखी।।
तनय जजातिहि जौबनु दयऊ। पितु अग्याँ अघ अजसु न भयऊ।।
दो0-अनुचित उचित बिचारु तजि जे पालहिं पितु बैन।
ते भाजन सुख सुजस के बसहिं अमरपति ऐन।।174।।

Muni Vashishttha further advised Bharat, “King Dashrath was fortunate in every way hence it is pointless to feel sorry for how king lived his life. Knowing this and understanding that his life was lived well you must shed all your sorrowful thoughts and should come forward to rule respecting your father’s royal command. King had given the status of crown prince to you before departing besides its your father’s word (given to Kaikeyi) and you should do every thing to keep its sanctity.

“You are well aware that he accepted separation from Shri Ram only to honor his word but since he could not withstand separation from Shri Ram he even gave away his life only so he keeps his word. This shows that for the king promise meant more than the life itself, in this light you must too actualize what he promised. Carry out what he wished to be done with due regard and respect, in this lies your own good in every conceivable way.

“You must know that honoring the command of his father, Muni Parasuram had beheaded his own mother and Puru, son of Yayati, had transferred willingly his own youth to father though these acts can’t meet approval ordinarily but since these acts were only to follow the instruction and wish of father it didn’t translate in to infamy or bring burden of sin for Parasuram or Puru.

“Those who give weight to the word of their father and act accordingly without thinking whether its right or wrong, desirable or undesirable, they ever remain happy and earn good name for themselves besides becoming eligible to live in the abode of king of immortal gods enjoying afterlife.”

(Parasuram had killed his mother as instructed by his father who later brought her back to life on strength of his Tapasya. In the other case Yayati had lost his youth early due a curse given to him; since he still craved to enjoy more he asked his sons to give their youth to him, only Puru came forward and transferred it to him. Enjoying life for a few years Yayati returned his son’s youth back to him. Both Parasuram and Puru were praised for their commitment to honor wishes of their father. In fact father and sons form a natural team with father in the lead, when the game is being played whatever the captain asks is done by the team-members without going in to its consequences if not so then the game gets spoiled. Secondly a father always has his sons’ interests in mind, knows more than him and is richer in experience as well while fully knows the capacity of the son therefore son should only concentrate on what father wants him to do.)

We have now covered up to Doha 174 of Ayodhya Kand.

अवसि नरेस बचन फुर करहू। पालहु प्रजा सोकु परिहरहू।।
सुरपुर नृप पाइहि परितोषू। तुम्ह कहुँ सुकृत सुजसु नहिं दोषू।।
बेद बिदित संमत सबही का। जेहि पितु देइ सो पावइ टीका।।
करहु राजु परिहरहु गलानी। मानहु मोर बचन हित जानी।।
सुनि सुखु लहब राम बैदेहीं। अनुचित कहब न पंडित केहीं।।
कौसल्यादि सकल महतारीं। तेउ प्रजा सुख होहिं सुखारीं।।
परम तुम्हार राम कर जानिहि। सो सब बिधि तुम्ह सन भल मानिहि।।
सौंपेहु राजु राम कै आएँ। सेवा करेहु सनेह सुहाएँ।।
दो0-कीजिअ गुर आयसु अवसि कहहिं सचिव कर जोरि।
रघुपति आएँ उचित जस तस तब करब बहोरि।।175।।

Muni kept advising Bharat and said, “In my opinion you surely must do that which redeems the word of your father; you must go ahead and take care of people after discarding feeling of sorrowfulness. This will surely make king very satisfied and ingratiated. This will add to your tally of noble deeds and bring renown for you and you will never be faulted for it.

“There is sanction of Vedas and all have an agreeable view in this regard that only he is entitled to be coronated who is granted this right by father. Happily rule over Ayodhya shedding any feeling of guilt, you may accept my words as I am saying this in your interest and for your well-being. Not only this even Shri Ram and Sita would be delighted if you take charge and also none of the experts in statecraft will find it objectionable.

“Think of Kaushalya and other mothers of yours who will be satisfied and happy when the subjects of Ayodhya will be well off and safe under your rule. Those who know you as a one who loves Shri Ram most and vice versa will feel indebted to you for your assuming the kingship. You will however remain free to hand over the reins of governance to Shri Ram when he comes back and then serve Him wholly as much as your affection for Him demands.”

After Muni finished his talk, the ministers came forward with hands folded requesting Bharat to do as per instructions and advice of Muni and said that whatever is deemed fit by him may still be done when Raghupati Shri Ram has returned back.
