We covered up to Doha 179 of Ayodhya Kand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas in the last post and learned that Bharat declared himself to be not worthy of getting anointed as the next king. He pleaded before the gathered people that he was the reason behind Shri Ram’s going in to exile and other unwanted happenings and reasoned that being son of Kaikeyi he must be having more faults than her as the effect is mostly more severe than the cause.

Bharat continued and said, “Haplessly and woefully my breathing continues and it clings to that very body which is born of Kaikeyi and remains attached to it. If living on is my choice even after the separation from the beloved then it seems that much more of the bad times is left to be seen and much more condemnation is to be faced. By sending Lakshman, Shri Ram and Sita to jungle, by forcing her husband to go to heavens, by accepting widowhood for herself as well as spoiling own reputation, by setting subjects of Ayodhya in to grieving, repenting and suffering and by ensuring for me to have comforts and pleasures, to get acclamation and to have an opportunity to establish a good benevolent empire whose purpose Kaikeyi has not served. What else is supposed to be a better proposition for me and my sake, on top of it you all are insistent upon anointing me. To have come in to this world through the womb of Kaikeyi and thereby getting all this is only just and in order. When Brahma, the creator, has lined up all this for me, why you, the esteemed ones and the people of Ayodhya come forward to help me.

“For a one who is afflicted by wrong positioning of stars, who suffers from Vaat-rog (the affliction of rheumatism which is hard to be seen and cured and is too painful) and who has also been bitten by a scorpion, is made to drink intoxicating substances by way of treatment then what kind of treatment is this.”

(Here Bharat wants to show the irony of circumstances and is being sarcastic viz a viz himself. He wishes to tell people that the remedy offered by people is not the right remedy because it is going to aggravate that very affliction that is intended to be cured. In world of existence we are faced with this kind of situations very often. An easy course is adopted which is only a temporary and superficial relief and in fact pushes down in the pit deeper. What does not belong to us must not be thought to be enjoyed at all and if it comes through manipulation by someone else for which we are not ourselves to be blamed even then it should never be accepted however decently it is presented to us.)

We have now covered up to Doha 180 of Ayodhya Kand.

Bharat continued and said,”Whatever is befitting for the son of a person like Kaikeyi is only thrown my way by the astute Brahma but to have given me honor of being son of King Dashrath and younger brother of Shri Ram simultaneously seems unnecessary and odd. All of you push me to get crowned saying that it has been so commanded by the departed king and would be in interest of all concerned; all of you easily speak whatever everyone of you feels pleased about, what I may tell any thing by way of an answer to everyone that will please him individually.

“Just tell who other than me and my wretched mother have gained or benefited in fact. Other than me who among all the animate and inanimate beings is there for whom Sita and Shri Ram are not more dear than life itself. The ultimate loss (i e of Sita and Shri Ram going out of life of all who are the very reason for the existence of all beings in reality) is being seen as good gain (in form of Bharat’s crowning) is really fault of none but is only due to my bad times approaching.

“You are all misguided and confused while you are also courteous to me due to your love for me therefore whatever you say seems right to you; even mother of Shri Ram who is basically very simple and decent and is specially affectionate towards me has said whatever she has said only due to her characteristic loving nature and also because she finds me in dire and pitiable state.”

(Bharat pointed out here that emotionally charged people can’t see things as they are; the conclusion therefore will also be not very rational. The point here is that what was intended to be achieved by deploying intrigue and manipulation should not be acceptable as an option; every possible attempt should be made to undo what happened and should not remain the basis of further course of action. All were failing in this respect and therefore were leaning in wrong way, is what Bharat intended to convey to them all.)

We have now covered up to Doha 181 of Ayodhya Kand.
