We covered up to Doha 187 of Ayodhya Kand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas in the last post and learned that people of Ayodhya eagerly and anxiously awaited for the break of dawn keeping awake for the whole night. When it was morning, Bharat asked his ministers to arrange for Shri Ram’s coronation ceremony to be performed by Muni in the forest itself and also get finally ready for leaving at the earliest. Bharat’s instructions were carried out fast and Muni Vashishtth and Arundhati were first to ride the chariot and move, the Vipras followed him and after them were the queens in nice palanquins and lastly the members of public were gently allowed by Bharat and Shatrughan to follow while the two brothers remaining at the back of them all joined but only after they had entrusted the city to trusted men who were of high commitment and honor.

Craving for the Darshan (eyeful glimpse) of Shri Ram all the men and women moved ahead like thirsty male and female elephants keep going towards the water source after locating it without taking interest in each other (i e all had their single pointed attention at seeing the Lord, this mental make up is a must for uniting with Him).

Bharat along with younger brother Shatrughan kept going on foot considering that Sita and Shri Ram in the forest also had no other means for moving hence they also should not use means available to them. When others observed them going on foot they appreciated their love for Shri Ram and became themselves very emotional and followed suit coming down from horses and elephants and vehicles. Mother Kaushalya could not bear her sons and subjects taking pains in this fashion and therefore got her palanquin to be put down near Bharat and softly spoke to him saying, “O Son, I swear by my life and as mother that you get on a chariot right away as otherwise all the near and dear ones in the family will be worried and upset and seeing you going on foot all others would do the same while none is strong enough to bear strain of walking having become weak on account of grieving for many days now.

Without any word of contradiction both brothers climbed on a chariot after bowing their heads before the mother and moved ahead. They first halted at the banks of Tamasa river for the night and next they halted at the bank of River Gomati.

While on way to go near their beloved Lord Shri Ram, some had only milk for food, some only fruits and rest resolved to have meals once only, in evening; this is how for sake of Shri Ram people resolved to observe fasting and other avowed practices while living and dressing up simply and avoid any kind of indulgence (all of us as seekers should also learn to live simply, observe spiritual practices regularly as per our own capacity and circumstances while avoiding excessive consumption and abandoning avoidable luxuries).

We have now covered up to Doha 188 of Ayodhya Kand.

Next night staying at bank of Sai they moved forward in the morning and came close to Shringverpur. The Nishadas got the news of their arrival and began to think with concern and worry as to why Bharat was also heading towards the forests; it looked to them that he had some ill design because if that was not the case why a whole army of people is accompanying him. They pondered that Bharat might have planned to kill both, Shri Rama and younger brother Lakshman, and then to comfortably rule over Ayodhya without any possible threat from them. They opined that it was not a good tactical move on Bharat’s part and he hadn’t followed a sound policy; so far he could only be blamed but now he would lose life (as he now intended to be violent too which must met with violence by them being friends of Shri Ram). They believed that combined armies of the demons and gods couldn’t win Shri Ram on the battlefield (as it was already known to all after surrender of the Demon Kings and god-like Parasuram at the Swyamvar of Sita) but they didn’t consider it strange possibility that Bharat had so decided because a poisonous creeper can’t produce life-saving fruits (indicating that he was after all a son of a vile person like Kaikeyi).

Concluding in this way Guha, the leader of the Nishadas, warned every one of his clan to be vigilant and ordered all the boats to be brought and so arranged that the steps to come over to bank on this side was blocked.

(We should appreciate here that Shri Ram is being saved from possible threats while he has not asked for it himself and that is because of his display of valor and of friendship at some point in past. So everyone of us should understand that valor and friendliness are two traits that keep us fortified at all times. Guha recalled these two things about Shri Ram while he got ready to defend him.)

We have now covered up to Doha 189 of Ayodhya Kand.

Bhavani Shankar ki Jai!
