राम सुना दुखु कान न काऊ। जीवनतरु जिमि जोगवइ राऊ।।
पलक नयन फनि मनि जेहि भाँती। जोगवहिं जननि सकल दिन राती।।
ते अब फिरत बिपिन पदचारी। कंद मूल फल फूल अहारी।।
धिग कैकेई अमंगल मूला। भइसि प्रान प्रियतम प्रतिकूला।।
मैं धिग धिग अघ उदधि अभागी। सबु उतपातु भयउ जेहि लागी।।
कुल कलंकु करि सृजेउ बिधाताँ। साइँदोह मोहि कीन्ह कुमाताँ।।
सुनि सप्रेम समुझाव निषादू। नाथ करिअ कत बादि बिषादू।।
राम तुम्हहि प्रिय तुम्ह प्रिय रामहि। यह निरजोसु दोसु बिधि बामहि।।
छं0-बिधि बाम की करनी कठिन जेंहिं मातु कीन्ही बावरी।
तेहि राति पुनि पुनि करहिं प्रभु सादर सरहना रावरी।।
तुलसी न तुम्ह सो राम प्रीतमु कहतु हौं सौहें किएँ।
परिनाम मंगल जानि अपने आनिए धीरजु हिएँ।।
सो0-अंतरजामी रामु सकुच सप्रेम कृपायतन।
चलिअ करिअ बिश्रामु यह बिचारि दृढ़ आनि मन।।201।।

We covered up to Doha 201 of Ayodhya Kand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas in the last post and learned that Bharat who was under great emotional distress gave inkling of what was going on in his mind to Nishad Guha saying that Shri Ram had no occasion to learn what sadness and trouble meant and was being looked after by the king like one looks after one’s own life; alas the same Ram should have to go into jungles without footwear and eat stems and roots etc. Bharat cursed mother Kaikeyi saying that she was the root cause of all trouble and that she became against both the king and her own beloved Ram and as a result he himself was now most blameworthy because for him only she turned this way. He said that he was now the blot on family and an unfaithful servant on account of bad mother of his. Guha then tried to console him saying that he needed not lament in this way as in fact he is dear to Shri Ram as much Shri Ram is dear to himself while this turmoil is just a turn of fate. Guha said mother’s mind might have been influenced wrongly by quirk of fate but he could stand testimony for the fact that throughout the night Ram was there He was all praise for Bharat and that none is as dear to Shri Ram much as him so assured about the good outcome Bharat might remain patient and peaceful. Guha added that Shri Ram knows of inner feelings of everyone and is very decent and merciful by nature hence Bharat might now have rest keeping this in mind.

सखा बचन सुनि उर धरि धीरा। बास चले सुमिरत रघुबीरा।।
यह सुधि पाइ नगर नर नारी। चले बिलोकन आरत भारी।।
परदखिना करि करहिं प्रनामा। देहिं कैकइहि खोरि निकामा।।
भरी भरि बारि बिलोचन लेंहीं। बाम बिधाताहि दूषन देहीं।।
एक सराहहिं भरत सनेहू। कोउ कह नृपति निबाहेउ नेहू।।
निंदहिं आपु सराहि निषादहि। को कहि सकइ बिमोह बिषादहि।।
एहि बिधि राति लोगु सबु जागा। भा भिनुसार गुदारा लागा।।
गुरहि सुनावँ चढ़ाइ सुहाईं। नईं नाव सब मातु चढ़ाईं।।
दंड चारि महँ भा सबु पारा। उतरि भरत तब सबहि सँभारा।।
दो0-प्रातक्रिया करि मातु पद बंदि गुरहि सिरु नाइ।
आगें किए निषाद गन दीन्हेउ कटकु चलाइ।।202।।

The words of the friend Guha had welcome effect on Bharat and he had courage and conviction in heart for it; he then went towards the resting place while constantly remembering Raghuveer Shri Ram. The accompanying citizens learnt about Bharat having moved from the spot where Shri Ram had rested and headed themselves towards the same spot to have a look but deeply anguished at the same time. All of them reached the spot and first perambulated then bowed down reverentially while cursing badly for what queen mother had done. With tears coming to eye repeatedly they blamed even the Vidhata Brahma. If one praised Bharat for his intense love for Shri Ram the other spoke of the way King Dashrath sacrificed life for love’s sake; they even praised Nishad Guha while felt ashamed of themselves for not being of service to the Lord. It is difficult to describe their sorrowfulness and their delusion and intense loss of heart.

People spent the entire night waking and discussing the subject of Shri Ram’s exile (it was Ram-katha being told by them all to each other which is the best way of passing distressful times) and when the day-break was noted there was hustle and bustle, calls were heard from all directions and all proceeded to wards the shore of river. First the Guru was made to board a decent boat and then the mothers occupied newly built boats. In under two ours all came across to the other bank of the river where alighting himself Bharat ensured all had come over.

Promptly performing morning rituals Bharat paid respects at the feet of mothers and then bowed down before the Guru, he then asked Nishdas to lead the way and prompted the whole army of people with him to move forward.

कियउ निषादनाथु अगुआईं। मातु पालकीं सकल चलाईं।।
साथ बोलाइ भाइ लघु दीन्हा। बिप्रन्ह सहित गवनु गुर कीन्हा।।
आपु सुरसरिहि कीन्ह प्रनामू। सुमिरे लखन सहित सिय रामू।।
गवने भरत पयोदेहिं पाए। कोतल संग जाहिं डोरिआए।।
कहहिं सुसेवक बारहिं बारा। होइअ नाथ अस्व असवारा।।
रामु पयोदेहि पायँ सिधाए। हम कहँ रथ गज बाजि बनाए।।
सिर भर जाउँ उचित अस मोरा। सब तें सेवक धरमु कठोरा।।
देखि भरत गति सुनि मृदु बानी। सब सेवक गन गरहिं गलानी।।
दो0-भरत तीसरे पहर कहँ कीन्ह प्रबेसु प्रयाग।
कहत राम सिय राम सिय उमगि उमगि अनुराग।।203।।

Bharat left it to head of Nishadas to lead and guide the entourage and sent forth the palanquins of the mothers under vigil of the younger brother Shatrughan. The Guru proceeded in company of the Vipras. Bharat then did Pranam to the divine river Ganges and also fondly remembered Sita and Shri Ram together with Lakshman; he then commenced his journey barefoot while the reined horses walked alongside. Bharat’s personal servants time and again reminded him to get astride the horse rather than inconvenience himself in this manner but Bharat argued that Shri Ram went on this section of journey on foot then in no case the cars, horses and elephants etc can be supposed to be for his use. He said that it would be more proper for him to go with his head down; the Dharma (duty) of a servant is very demanding and harsh (here he propounded the principle that who become servants of someone should learn to live in lesser comforts than the master otherwise the very essence of service will miss in the servants’ conduct. For Bharat Shri Ram had the status of master which he willingly had accepted, his conduct should therefore remain in line with the demand of duty). Observing Bharat behave in this manner and listening to his humble utterances which were more directed towards himself rather than towards teaching others, all the servants felt very disdainful themselves, they found themselves short of such high standard of serving their own master.

At about the hour past the afternoon Bharat stepped on the stretch known as Prayag (this is where the confluence of river Ganga and Yamuna takes place and is considered to be very sacred spot along with area surrounding it) and he began to repeat the names of Bhagwati Sita and Shri Ram together with great affection and devotion each time i e repeatedly muttered Sita-Ram with ever increasing emotional thrust (as the piety of the place, placed his mind in to that particular state of mind where the nearness to God is craved for and atmosphere supports and makes one feel the nearness with Him more easily; such places are called Thirthas).
