We covered up to Doha 205 of Ayodhya Kand in Ramchar Manas of Tulsidas in the last post and learned that not concerned whether Shri Ram would know him to be a bad person or people would know him as one who acted against his own master and Guru, Bharat prayed before the Prayagraj only for his devotion towards the feet of Sita-Ram to ever increase with the kind graces of Prayagraj and did not ask for any material or other kind of benefits. Bharat thought, according to his position, his only valid right was to be more devoted and affectionate towards Sita-Ram. A benign voice emerging out of Triveni praised Bharat and assured him that Shri Ram loved him more than any one else. This made Bharat very relieved and he felt very pleased in his heart now: the gods also showered flowers listening to this declaration and greatly praised Bharat.

All those who were living at Prayag like the learners, seekers, householders and the recluse felt great joy also at this and conversed in groups saying that Bharat’s devotion and love for Shri Ram was really true and pure and his conduct too very decent. Concentrating on the virtues of Shri Ram being sung by people there on the way Bharat reached at the Ashram of great Muni Bhardwaj.

Muni Bhardwaj saw Bharat prostrating while doing Pranam to him and considered that his good fortune had come before him taking a form i e Muni felt that occasion to meet Bharat could only be the effect of his most favorable turn in life. Muni then rushed to pick up Bharat and embrace him heartily and also blessed Bharat making him rich and accomplished totally in all his undertakings,in past and in future. When Muni offered a seat to Bharat to sit down, he set down but with his head turned downwards as if thinking to run back home fearing that Muni might inquire about what had happened in Ayodhya (about which Bharat had still not stopped thinking that he was the main reason behind the exile of Shri Ram). Muni sensed the predicament of Bharat and his apparent meekness and therefore wished to comfort him saying, “Listen O’ Bharat, I have full understanding and knowledge of event that took place in Ayodhya and rest afterwards; there is no control over what plays out on account of fate unfolding (we may recall here that Lord Shri Ram had given the whole truthful account to Muni while He visited Muni earlier and thus Muni was fully and genuinely ready to give Bharat all the comfort that he needed most at this hour of crisis in his life, such is the manner of the Lord to care for the Bhakta).

“You must not feel belittled and must not cringe in your heart for thinking that your mother has acted in such manner because it is not even the fault of Kaikeyi, in fact it was the goddess of speech who tricked her in to saying and doing what she did.”

We have now covered up to Doha 207 of Ayodhya Kand.

Muni continued and said, “This coming from me only will not be honorable for everyone as the wise check every thing in light of what the people at large think and what the Vedas endorse in such matters but here the fact of the matter is that the people and the Vedas will deserve to be praised in coming time by singing your pristine glory and enhancing your fame.

“The people and the Vedas i e all have the same opinion that its the right of father to give the throne to any one of his sons; being truthful and bound by his vow, the king would have only called you to hold the reigns of the kingdom with pleasure and that way would have secured Dharma as well as put himself high in eyes of the world by doing so.

“At the root of this whole disturbance and people’s sorrow is the exile of Ram in to the forest but that too happened on account of the unwise and uncouth queen doing this uncalled for trick which really may be attributed to providence and she is now herself sorry and repentant for.

“So in this light you have little blame for it, who ever will want to implicate you in this would be someone vile, ignorant and of dubious character himself. If you had accepted to rule none would have faulted you for it besides even Ram would have felt pleased about it.

“Now what you have decided to do is the most graceful thing to do, you are really on right course because at the root of all that is benevolent and auspicious in this world is one’s devotion at and love for Ram’s feet.”

(We may appreciate here that Bharat, the Bhakta with purest heart could easily reach the exalted point in behavior which was beyond what the Munis, the Vedas and the people thought was right.)
