We covered up to Doha 222 of Ayodhya Kand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas in the last post and learned that seeing Bharat and Shatrughan walking barefoot like Shri Ram and Lakshman and also looking alike a group of female friends mistook them to be Shri Ram and Lakshman but then one of them noted the difference and said that these two look unhappy, are not accompanied by Sita and also have a composite army escorting them hence it could not be the two brothers earlier seen by them. All appreciated this logic while another one of them told the whole story how Shri Ram’s coronation related ceremonies had to be suspended and rest of the story and praised Bharat for his affable nature, affection and basic character. She told also that now walking barefoot, eating fruits and shunning the kingdom of Ayodhya which had been offered to him by his own father is going to meet Shri Ram and urge Him to return; this makes Bharat stand out as a Bhakta and purest of conduct.

Another one of the ladies stated, “O Friend, the brotherliness, devotion and most of all his behavior and conduct when talked of do remove the traces of sorrow (which people feel for every small loss) and remove the faults (in the character of those who learn of what Bharat set out to do) hence whatever praises are directed towards him are not enough; Bharat is after all brother of Shri Ram and therefore would naturally have abundance of virtues.

“All of us have seen Bharat along with the younger brother Shatrughan and this makes us very endowed among the young women (that at a young age such good turn of fortune had been granted to us by God).”

Finally the group of young ladies repented that though Bharat possessed so many virtues yet is facing such hard times and concluded that surely Kaikeyi did not deserve to have a son like him. At this point one of them said, “it is no fault of Kaikeyi and is rather work of Brahma who must have become favorably inclined towards us and provided this great fortune (of first seeing Shri Ram and Lakshman pass by and now Bharat and Shatrughan).

“We must appreciate that we have been barred from undertaking prescribed rituals mentioned in Vedas neither the social customs rate us worthy of much; we belong to lowly placed families besides we do only menial jobs. We live in wilderness, in small villages without facilities and are worthless women in every way. For us to have Shri Ram and Bharat in our sight, their presence right before eyes can only be result of many noble deeds of earlier lives.” Like this only was the common refrain in almost all villages and all rejoiced for it; it was something like Kalptaru (the wish granting tree) being planted in the middle of desert region.

With sight of Bharat the people standing along his path had their fortune smile on them, they became abundantly lucky; this is comparable to the people in Simhala (i e island of Lanka which is surrounded by sea of salty water) having Prayag, the sacred point of confluence of divine rivers, within their approach.

We have now covered up to Doha 223 of Ayodhya Kand.

Bharat kept progressing while the praises for himself and stories about virtues of Shri Ram fell in to his ears (as all along people had their own stories about them as subject of discussion) but he kept his own attention fixed on Raghunath Shri Ram. Bharat kept visiting the Tirthas, the Ashrams of Munis and the temples of gods that he came across while moving on, he attentively looked at them and stayed for while to freshen up and be relaxed and also paid obeisance (Bharat used this occasion to note if any of these places needed repair or other kind of help; these are the places where the servants of God are found, they serve other travelers and provide for them but equally men of means should learn what they need, looked after and provided for them whenever possible). At all these sacred places where usually visitors pray for fulfillment of their wishes Bharat only silently wished for boon of having his affection for and devotion at lotus feet of Sita and Ram keep growing.

Whomever Bharat met on his way, like forest dwellers, hunters, students, seekers, after wishing and saluting them, he had only this to inquire from them that where in the forest Shri Ram, Lakshman and Vaidehi Sita might have gone to. All then used to convey to him all the news in their possession about Prabhu Shri Ram and in return received the reward of a lifetime by having Darshan of Bharat. Those who told Bharat seeing Shri Ram Lakshman and Sita go along safely were treated by Bharat as an equal of Shri Ram, Lakshman and Sita because it was them who were keeping him on right track. In this way Bharat begged to learn more and then listened to stories about Shri Ram’s advance in the forest, with attention.

(Bhakats and seekers while on their spiritual journeys meet many good people, who ever has had a glimpse of their Lord is often put some questions to by them and when they get answers from them they consider them to be their Gurus and honor them as much as the Lord for its them who keep them on right path leading to Lord.)

Not rushing out from such places where Bharat met people who could narrate actual events relating to Shri Ram, Bharat used to halt there itself for the day and proceed the next morning (such was interest of Bharat in Kathas of Shri Ram because a Bhakta is never easily satisfied when he has an occasion to listen to Katha of Shri Ram).

We have now covered up to Doha 224 of Ayodhya Kand.
