सकल सनेह सिथिल रघुबर कें। गए कोस दुइ दिनकर ढरकें।।
जलु थलु देखि बसे निसि बीतें। कीन्ह गवन रघुनाथ पिरीतें।।
उहाँ रामु रजनी अवसेषा। जागे सीयँ सपन अस देखा।।
सहित समाज भरत जनु आए। नाथ बियोग ताप तन ताए।।
सकल मलिन मन दीन दुखारी। देखीं सासु आन अनुहारी।।
सुनि सिय सपन भरे जल लोचन। भए सोचबस सोच बिमोचन।।
लखन सपन यह नीक न होई। कठिन कुचाह सुनाइहि कोई।।
अस कहि बंधु समेत नहाने। पूजि पुरारि साधु सनमाने।।
छं0-सनमानि सुर मुनि बंदि बैठे उत्तर दिसि देखत भए।
नभ धूरि खग मृग भूरि भागे बिकल प्रभु आश्रम गए।।
तुलसी उठे अवलोकि कारनु काह चित सचकित रहे।
सब समाचार किरात कोलन्हि आइ तेहि अवसर कहे।।
दो0-सुनत सुमंगल बैन मन प्रमोद तन पुलक भर।
सरद सरोरुह नैन तुलसी भरे सनेह जल।।226।।

We covered up to Doha 226 of Ayodhya Kand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas in the last post and learned that Bharat and rest in his party who were tired and emotionally charged with love for Shri after sighting the hill on which Shri Ram was staying decided to stay for the night finding a suitable place near flowing water and started early the next morning to meet Lord Shri Ram. On the other side Sita saw a dream in the later part of night that Bharat had come there with many and all were very sad while the mothers-in-law looked differently dressed and related it to Shri Ram who too was now awake and He then became worried and thoughtful. Shri Ram told Lakshman that such a dream suggested some thing not right had happened and then went about observing the morning routine of taking bath etc. Then Shri Ram worshiped Lord Shiv and honored the Sadhus and Munis and then set down looking towards north; shortly He saw cloud of dust and birds and animals getting active. Worrying what might have caused it He rushed to be with Sita at Ashram where some forest dwellers told Him all about the approaching party from Ayodhya, this made Him happy and thrilled and He had tears in His eyes expecting to meet His dear ones from Ayodhya.

बहुरि सोचबस भे सियरवनू। कारन कवन भरत आगवनू।।
एक आइ अस कहा बहोरी। सेन संग चतुरंग न थोरी।।
सो सुनि रामहि भा अति सोचू। इत पितु बच इत बंधु सकोचू।।
भरत सुभाउ समुझि मन माहीं। प्रभु चित हित थिति पावत नाही।।
समाधान तब भा यह जाने। भरतु कहे महुँ साधु सयाने।।
लखन लखेउ प्रभु हृदयँ खभारू। कहत समय सम नीति बिचारू।।
बिनु पूँछ कछु कहउँ गोसाईं। सेवकु समयँ न ढीठ ढिठाई।।
तुम्ह सर्बग्य सिरोमनि स्वामी। आपनि समुझि कहउँ अनुगामी।।
दो0-नाथ सुह्रद सुठि सरल चित सील सनेह निधान।।
सब पर प्रीति प्रतीति जियँ जानिअ आपु समान।।227।।

This piece of news delivered by the forest dwellers made Sita’s master get engrossed in deeper thoughts and also somewhat worried, He pondered over the possible reason of Bharat coming there; in the mean while another one of the local people came and told Him that there was fully fledged army of big size accompanying Bharat. With this information Shri Ram got into more intensive thinking and get more worried too (for an entire army, fully equipped, does not move without a big reason). He now was faced with dilemma thinking that He might receive a request from Bharat for some kind of help in distress and He was bound by father’s instructions and command (that he would be totally neutral and stay in the forest for 14 years); thinking that Bharat would never ask for an unjust cause to be served, Lord Shri Ram’s heart swayed because He could not assess the depth and seriousness of situation and conclude. When He further learned that Bharat had company of Sadhus and of the wise and experienced elders too,He found some relief and knew that if Bharat was being guided buy such people there was no big need for Him to worry too much.

Lakshman who was watching Shri Ram closely knew that Shri Ram was a bit agitated on account of the development and was not at peace and therefore decided to speak out as per the demand of the hour giving due thought to what was proper and said,”I dare to speak without being asked, my Lord, because if a servant acts without being prompted to act in times of crisis, its not to be seen as his being stubborn or foolish. You know all that should be known and You are the Lord of all, yet I wish to speak some thing as per my own wisdom but in my capacity of a follower of Your command and who will only walk behind You.

“Master, You have a sympathetic heart, You have straight approach and simple thinking, besides You are very cultured (i e can’t think of harming others) and are too affectionate towards all, You are prone to love all and have Your confidence in all and think that all are like You (i e do not have tricky mind, selfish motives hence for You to judge what others might think and do is difficult).”

(Lakshman here gave a good account of what the Supreme Lord stands for and that He only has the interest of Jeevas in His heart though Jeevas might think and do whatever they want without Lord having control over it (in Gita the same thing finds mention as ‘karmanyevadhikarstey’. Also the Jeevatma is basically like the Paramatman more so when its without Mayic influence and Lord knows this and expects the Jeevatma to look at Himself in this way.)

बिषई जीव पाइ प्रभुताई। मूढ़ मोह बस होहिं जनाई।।
भरतु नीति रत साधु सुजाना। प्रभु पद प्रेम सकल जगु जाना।।
तेऊ आजु राम पदु पाई। चले धरम मरजाद मेटाई।।
कुटिल कुबंध कुअवसरु ताकी। जानि राम बनवास एकाकी।।
करि कुमंत्रु मन साजि समाजू। आए करै अकंटक राजू।।
कोटि प्रकार कलपि कुटलाई। आए दल बटोरि दोउ भाई।।
जौं जियँ होति न कपट कुचाली। केहि सोहाति रथ बाजि गजाली।।
भरतहि दोसु देइ को जाएँ। जग बौराइ राज पदु पाएँ।।
दो0-ससि गुर तिय गामी नघुषु चढ़ेउ भूमिसुर जान।
लोक बेद तें बिमुख भा अधम न बेन समान।।228।।

Lakshman furhter said, “The Jeeva, mired in sense gratification, when gets some position of power, only becomes more foolish and gets motivated in the unwanted direction and acts accordingly. It is surely true that Bharat is known to be pursuing righteous and valid conduct, is wise and knowledgeable and is unselfish and sober; that Bharat has intense love towards the feet of Lord is also well known in the world.

“The same Bharat, now having had right over seat of Shri Ram, seems to have forgotten the limits that Dharma, the abounding duty, places and has crossed it. He like a cunning and crafty brother, finding an opportunity that Shri Ram has moved in to jungle alone, almost without any help, under evil advice and fully equipped in all respects has come to eliminate all impediments in having a rule over an empire totally unchallenged in future.

“Devising innumerable means of acting in weird ways, the two brothers, Bharat and Shatrughan, have collected supporters and have come here. Just think, if they did not have any wrong and deceitful designs why would they have thought of coming in comfort with Raths (chariots), horses and elephants lined up (if it was just a meeting with you as their goal because you had none of these while coming here).

“It is not just that Bharat has to be faulted for it, all in the world have been known to act madly when they happen to get the throne of as a king; didn’t Mood-god go near his Guru’s woman with wrong intent, didn’t Naghush ride on palanquin carried by Brahmins, the gods on earth and didn’t Ven, the vile-king, go against the scriptures and the established customs of the world (these are the stories covered in Poranas) when they had powerful positions.”
