We covered up to Doha 250 of Ayodhya Kand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas in the last post and learned that the people were happy to stay for a few days more at Chitrakoot and they enjoyed their time fully there by observing a routine of piety and devotion and by roaming around. They were offered meals of fruits and roots etc by the local people without accepting any thing in return. They told guests that they as noble citizens of Ayodhya should only recognize their love and that it was their good fortune to have them in their midst. The forest dwellers said that the subjects should be like the king, Shri Ram treated Nishadraj Guha like a friend similarly they deserved to be treated the same way and requested all to enjoy the offered stuff without having reservation and that way oblige them.

The tribals further said, “You, our beloved people, have stepped here in the forest but alas we don’t have good fortune to serve as we must (for want of means with us), what we can give to you that’s befitting your superior status. We can only arrange for fuel and some eatable stuff, the friendship of us as hunters and gatherers ends just with that. As for our service unto you, it is enough for us to not steal your clothes and utensils etc. We are uncouth and mindless, we only know to kill animals and birds. We are mischievous and tricky, we are low born and wicked. Our days and nights go waste in criminal activities still we aren’t able to have clothes to cover our waists neither have enough to fill our stomachs. Those who have such conditions for living can hardly be supposed to developing righteous tendencies. That we seem to have some qualities is only on account of having had Darshan (sight) of Shri Ram. Since after we had glimpse of the lotus feet of the Lord, we have been relieved of the unbearable miseries of life and our faults.”

In this manner all of locals began to appreciate their good fortune of having met Shri Ram and expressed themselves in lovely words. The people of Ayodhya also felt pleased about the manner in which they were being treated and for the love of locals for the feet of Bhagwati Sita and Shri Ram. They even thought poorly of themselves regarding the kind of love they had for Sita and Ram when they evaluated the words of the simple folks which were said in their welcome. Tulsidas says that it is only the grace of the gem like person in the family of Raghu that the iron block could float with the wood plank over it i e the learned and cultured had some things to learn from simpletons of the forest region.

The people roamed about in the jungles as delighted as the frogs and peacocks feel up on first downpour of the rainy season.

(It is to be understood here that there is no great difference between the so called learned and the uneducated, the real wisdom dawns only when one appreciates the hand of God in every thing that happens and the underlying love of the Lord in His treatment viz a viz simple people with pure heart. The glimpse of qualities and virtues of the Lord observed with non-agitated heart and mind cleanses the evilness of the heart and mind and such purity brings all happiness and sees refinement in behavior with fellow human beings.

We have now covered up to Doha 251 of Ayodhya Kand.

पुर जन नारि मगन अति प्रीती। बासर जाहिं पलक सम बीती।।

नीच कीच बिच मगन जस मीनहि सलिल सँकोच।।252।।

The citizens of Ayodhya, now overwhelmed with sentiment of love, felt their days passing like time taken to bat an eye. Sita on the other hand, attired simply like mothers-in-law engaged herself in their service with respect and served each one of them with equal attention as she had assumed three forms. The fact behind this magical performance was only known to Shri Ram and none else, He knew it well that all sorts of Maya (the delusive happenings) had their source in Sita as Maya (the delusive power inseparable from the Lord).

The straight and simple treatment by Sita and the two brothers, Shri Ram and Lakshman, now noted noted by Kaikeyi, the wicked queen, made her very repentant of what she had done; she asked the earth to split and engulf her and asked the Yama (the god of death) to take her life but neither obliged her. The Kavi (philosophers) say which is also mentioned in Vedas and is known to people too that those who are against Ram i e keep their faces turned away from Ram, the Supreme God of Universe, do not find place even in hell i e suffer more than one suffers in hell (the non-believers about existence of God lose all possibility of turning to Him in times when they want some help up on everyone turning against them).

Everyone present at the spot, although very much aware of the kind disposition of Shri Ram, had doubt whether Shri Ram would agree to come back to Ayodhya (for they had an inkling that Shri Ram never prefers anything that goes against Dharma).

This thought took away the sleep during the nights and diminished hunger during the day, even Bharat who is very pure of heart at all times had worry on this account (because those are pure in heart never have worries or distressful times but here the possibility of remaining separated from beloved Shri Ram was at the core of the matter). Bharat’s condition was like the fishes which though comfortable in the muddy water at bottom of the pond for the time being remain uncomfortable about its drying up every passing moment (for Bharat the comfort was this that he was with Shri Ram for the moment but knowing Shri Ram he doubted His return to Ayodhya, the Bhaktas have an idea about what would be their master preference as much as he is aware that the Lord remains ready to do what is dear to the heart of His Bhakta).
