कहउँ सुभाउ सत्य सिव साखी। भरत भूमि रह राउरि राखी।।
तात कुतरक करहु जनि जाएँ। बैर पेम नहि दुरइ दुराएँ।।
मुनि गन निकट बिहग मृग जाहीं। बाधक बधिक बिलोकि पराहीं।।
हित अनहित पसु पच्छिउ जाना। मानुष तनु गुन ग्यान निधाना।।
तात तुम्हहि मैं जानउँ नीकें। करौं काह असमंजस जीकें।।
राखेउ रायँ सत्य मोहि त्यागी। तनु परिहरेउ पेम पन लागी।।
तासु बचन मेटत मन सोचू। तेहि तें अधिक तुम्हार सँकोचू।।
ता पर गुर मोहि आयसु दीन्हा। अवसि जो कहहु चहउँ सोइ कीन्हा।।
दो0-मनु प्रसन्न करि सकुच तजि कहहु करौं सोइ आजु।
सत्यसंध रघुबर बचन सुनि भा सुखी समाजु।।264।।

We covered up to Doha 264 of Ayodhya Kand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas in the last post and learned that Shri Ram further told Bharat that He as truthful person would state this as truth only that the world stayed in place only due to likes of Bharat and Bharat should not apply any logic contradicting it and also said that feeling of love or hate is difficult to conceal by any one; that Bharat’s love for him is genuine is perfectly known to him. Shri Ram then told Bharat that he had some conflicting matters to deal hence was unable to decide what to speak. Shri Ram said next, “it is well known that their father, the King of Ayodhya, agreed to be separated from me for the sake of upholding truth and preferred death to prove his love hence, my younger brother, I have some unwillingness in doing something contradictory to his  word but at the same time i am more concerned about what you want. This apart, even Guru has directed me to consider your views first and therefore I would readily do what you wish. Now be happy and ask me forthwith what is it that you want me to do.” These words of truthful Shri Ram made the assembly of people there most happy as it represented their own opinion.

सुर गन सहित सभय सुरराजू। सोचहिं चाहत होन अकाजू।।
बनत उपाउ करत कछु नाहीं। राम सरन सब गे मन माहीं।।
बहुरि बिचारि परस्पर कहहीं। रघुपति भगत भगति बस अहहीं।
सुधि करि अंबरीष दुरबासा। भे सुर सुरपति निपट निरासा।।
सहे सुरन्ह बहु काल बिषादा। नरहरि किए प्रगट प्रहलादा।।
लगि लगि कान कहहिं धुनि माथा। अब सुर काज भरत के हाथा।।
आन उपाउ न देखिअ देवा। मानत रामु सुसेवक सेवा।।
हियँ सपेम सुमिरहु सब भरतहि। निज गुन सील राम बस करतहि।।
दो0-सुनि सुर मत सुरगुर कहेउ भल तुम्हार बड़ भागु।
सकल सुमंगल मूल जग भरत चरन अनुरागु।।265।।

When the gods and their leader Indra listened Shri Ram telling Bharat that He is ready to do what Bharat desires, all of them thought that some thing untoward for them was now going to occur (like Shri Ram might return to Ayodhya and demons will not be killed). But felt helpless to do anything (their plan to impact the intellect of Bharat had been rejected by Goddess Saraswati and the preceptor of gods earlier) hence they all looked within to seek refuge from Shri Ram, the indweller and Supreme Lord. The gods began to consult each other, look for ways that might help and concluded that Lord of Raghus’ Shri Ram only cares for devotees and is influenced by their devotion. Recalling the fate of Saint Durvasa for his ego-centric behavior viz a viz a devotee known as King Ambrish, the gods and their king Indra felt very helpless and became totally desperate. In early ages when the gods suffered at hands of Hirankashipu, only after a considerable wait did Bhakta Prahlad invoke God to manifest as Nar-Hari (as half lion and half human) to kill the demon and save them. Beating their foreheads annoyingly they kept whispering in to each others ears that their remedy was in hands of Bharat and that no other means were in their possession or control; Shri Ram could only be influenced by a good servant of His through devotion and service. Lastly their advice to each other was to invoke Bharat to help them as He had already by virtue of his own qualities, behavioral simplicity and straightness won the heart of Shri Ram (who had just promised to act as per Bharat’s wishes).

When the Guru Vrihaspati learned of resolve of the gods, he told them that they were really fortunate to have come to this conclusion and that without doubt, its the devotion at the feet of Bharat (and of Bhaktas like Bharat) that is the very source of all welfare and blissful existence in this world.

(For us the message is that even the gods have no power to change the will of Lord but Bhaktas have that power. When the gods need to approach the Lord, they also have to seek favor of a Bhakta. We might not have the glimpse of Lord directly but we do see and come across His devotees and they have the power to connect us with Lord, therefore we should be alert and careful in this regard, honor the Bhaktas, keep their company and seek advice and help.)
