We covered up to Doha 284 of Ayodhya Kand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas in the last post and learned that Sumitra, mother of Lakshman, responded to visiting Sunayanaji by thoughtfully saying that the scheme of the creator is very strange and mostly adverse who first creates, then nurses but in the end destroys like a child’s innocent play. Then Kaushalya said that it is Karma that is at the back of sufferings and pleasure, loss and gains in our lives; the intricate working of the Karmic Siddhant i e of the principle of actions translating in to effect is only known to the god who decides to reward or punish, god’s will has to prevail regarding the beginning, continuation and end of every thing and regarding the effect of substances, good or bad. She then advised Sunayanaji to get over the thoughts born out of illusion with an understanding that the complex cycle of events in this mundane world is governed by the lord since ever and has a set course which is hard to be influenced.  Kaushalya also explained that thoughts regarding  the life and death of King Dashrath arise on account of our own perceived  interest and loss. Sita’s mother then agreed to the words of wisdom coming from Kaushalyaji and praised her and her husband King Dashrath for the righteous life lived by them. Kaushalya in the end expressed her concern about Bharat and said that the exile of Sita and Ram did not otherwise portend any big trouble in her opinion.

Mother Kaushalya further said to Sunayanaji, “O friend, by the grace of god and due to your blessings and good wishes all my sons and daughters-in-law are as pure as the water of the divine river Ganges. I have never sworn by Ram, I now do it and tell you that even Goddess Sharda’s intellect would be inadequate in expounding Bharat’s qualities like his congeniality, sobriety and other virtues like his brotherliness, his devotion and dependability in the same manner as is difficult to empty out ocean’s water using an oyster-shell. King Dashrath told me many times that he has known Bharat to be the one who at all times glorifies his entire family. Purity of gold is known by rubbing it on a touchstone, value of rare and costly stones can only be judged by an expert and the qualities and character of a gentleman is best known when he encounters tough times. I might have told many things that I should not have but under spell of profound grief and due to excess of affection, one tends to be losing reasonableness and sense of balance.”

Ganga like pure stream of thoughts coming loudly from mouth of Kaushalya when dropped in ears of all the queens there, they all became overwhelmed with affection themselves (they could very well identify with a mother’s views being mothers themselves).”

Regaining her composure, Kaushalya told Sunayanaji, “O Devi, you keep company of King of Mithila and are most dear to him, is known to be treasure of wisdom and discretion therefore it is hard for any one to give good counsel to you as you know and understand all that is there to know.”

We have now covered up to Doha 283 of Ayodhya Kand.

Kaushalya further told Sunayanaji, “O Queen, finding an opportune moment, you may talk to King Janak and convince him that Lakshman should be asked to stay back and Bharat should be sent to keep company of Ram in the jungle, should the king too find this opinion this as valid.

“If enough effort in this direction is made after due consideration of all matters then it will only be best alternative; I am mostly concerned about Bharat who very deeply loves Ram and if he is kept separated from him then it would not be right, safe and desirable (Kaushalya placed her thought in resolving larger issues facing the family and not in terms of her own individual interest).”

Noticing Kaushalya’s magnanimity and listening to her straight views delivered in very effective manner all the queens felt dejected and developed a pathetic mood. Sound of praises were heard and flowers rained from heaven. Yogis and Munis became nervous due to surge of emotions. All ladies assembled there watched all this and became dumbfounded as a result. Sumitra then summoned some courage and uttered, “O Devi, its more than an hour in to the night now.”

Kaushalya taking notice of the same got up slowly and in an endearing and polite manner submitted to Sunayanaji, “Its late hence kindly retire to your camp without further delay and rest for the night; as for us, only god is our refuge and only the King of Mithila our saviour.”

We have now covered up to Doha 284 of Ayodhya Kand.
