We now enter the third descent called Aranya Kand in Shri Ramcharit Manas with blessings of Lord Ganesha and of Jankivallabh Shri Ram.

Goswami Tulsidas  begins it with Shloka dedicated to Lord Shiv and prays “I bow down to and praise Lord Shankar who is born of none but self and is dear to and loves by Shri Ram, the King. Shankar is the root of the tree of Dharma, he is like full moon to bring surging joy in the ocean of wisdom, he is like sun to make the lotus of dispassion bloom, he acts like wind to disperse the cloud of ignorance and false attachment and he removes the blemish of sins.”

Worshiping Shri Ram, Tulsi says, “I worship Shri Ram, the most attractive one who together with Sita and Lakshman is progressing on his path (in the jungle), who is embodiment of Anand (joy) and looks dark like cloud rich in water vapors, who is clad in beautiful yellowish clothes, who is keeping a bow and arrow in hand with a quiver full of arrows gracefully attached to his waist, whose large eyes are lotus like and who has his tangled hair neatly arranged over his head enhancing beauty.”

सो0-उमा राम गुन गूढ़ पंडित मुनि पावहिं बिरति।
पावहिं मोह बिमूढ़ जे हरि बिमुख न धर्म रति।।

Lord Shankar who is telling Ramkatha to Parvati mentioned to her, “O Uma, the virtues and qualities of Shri Ram are complex and have deep meaning, learning of which the Pandits (learned people) and Munis (the ones who have reflected on them thoroughly) get to develop a sense of non-attachment while those who are unintelligent and stubborn by temperament, who have no real interest in matters of Dharma and have a tendency to deny existence of Hari, the Lord of Universe, or look away from Him, become more ignorant, confused and bereft of the benefits flowing out of listing to His virtues.

“I just told you in detail, acoording to my understanding, the affection of Bharat and of the citizens of Ayodhya for Shri Ram which I take to be very special and very interesting. Now listen to Lord’s further activities, pure and pious, that were performed in the forest for pleasure of the gods, of the ordinary people and of the Munis. Once Shri Ram picked most beautiful fresh flowers and converted them in to ornaments with His own hands. Then He respectfully helped Sita wear them while sitting on a beautiful rock of asphalt (in this way Shri Ram guided the husbands to use free time to amuse wives and show respect to their soft feelings, there is life beyond the duties too).

“Right at that time son of the chief of gods (Jayanta) foolishly wished to measure the strength of Shri Ram (as he got confused when he saw Shri Ram acting like ordinary people) and planned to act like most stupid person in same way as an ant would want to measure depth of ocean. Dumb and witless, he disguised himself purposefully as a crow and struck at the foot of Sita with his beak; Sita got hurt on that account and Shri Ram noted blood flowing from the cut in her foot. To punish him he used dried grass sticks like bow and arrow and discharged it aiming at him.

Jayant, the one harboring villainous tendencies and a veritable fool, played trick with such Lord of Raghus who is very graceful by temperament and is always in favor of the weak and meek.”

We have now covered up to Doha 1 of Aranya Kand in Ramcharit Manas.

Bhavani Shankar Ki Jai!
