Shri Ram had empowered His arrow with a Mantra to make it potential with power of Brahma and it advanced in the direction of Jayant, who was in form of crow, to punish him.  Scared Jayant assumed his original form and went to his father (Lord Indra) for safety but he refused to give him shelter knowing that he had acted inimically against none other than Ram, the Supreme Lord of Universe. When he failed to get help even from his father he felt dejected and his heart cringed in the same way as once Rishi Durvasa had felt when Lord Hari had sent his Sudarshan Charka to scare him and to make him aware that those in protection of the Lord shouldn’t be posed any danger to for any perceived faults of theirs or be taken to be weak and unprotected (this is a famous story in Puranas).

Jayant then visited the place of Brahma and then went to see Lord Shiv at Kailash and later to all other possible places but in vain, none extended him any help. Tired, anguished, scared and sorrowful Jayant had to return from all places as none even offered him a seat to sit down. None could have dared to help some one who had acted against Ram, the Supreme Lord.

At this stage of Ramkatha, Kakbhushundi told Garud, “O Garud, you are carrier of Lord Vishnu, listen carefully that to such a person (one acting against the Lord) even a mother becomes death like and father acts like Yama, the god of death, for him even life giving nectar works as poison. His friend acts like an army of enemies, the divine river Ganges becomes Vaitarni (the dreadful river needed to be crossed after death). The whole world is then hotter then the fire who acts and turns inimical to Raghuvar Shri Ram, O Brother.”

Muni Narad, the saint of high order who has unhindered access to all divine places, noted the plight of troubled Jayant, as the saints have a softness in their hearts he felt merciful towards him and therefore prompted him to go back to Ram only (Narad knew that only Ram could call back the arrow directed at Jayant). Taking the cue Jayant reached near Shri Ram calling him as helper to one seeking His shelter and surrendered. Eager and scared, Jayant grabbed feet of Shri Ram and cried loudly out for the help of the Graceful Lord Raghuraj Shri Ram (for him the confusion about Shri Ram had ended and he knew Him to be the Lord Himself).

Jayant prayed saying, “You have unmatched strength and Your glory is infinite, I being of low wit could not understand it earlier. I have got the punishment for what I foolishly did, now I have come seeking Your shelter.” Shri Ram, the merciful one, listened to his anguished cries and made him one eyed (symbolically meaning that he gave him a unified vision which would make him see reality without confusion from that time onward).

Jayant under confusion and wrong understanding had challenged Shri Ram, for such an act he deserved to be given death (if one goes against the Supreme Lord under whose regime the entire world acts, his action would only invite death for him) but the Lord out of compassion left him unharmed rather gave him reward of such sight that enabled him to see only what is right, who can be as kind as Raghuveer Shri Ram.

(It is an everyday affair that we do something out of ignorance which is against the desire of God and soon come to realize our mistake and bear the brunt of it but as soon as we make amends as guided by saints and Gurus and seek forgiveness we feel relieved and not only this we then have a better understanding of what is right, this is what we should take as Lord’s grace only.)

We have covered up to Doha 2 of Aranya Kand in Ramcharit Manas.
