अनुसुइया के पद गहि सीता। मिली बहोरि सुसील बिनीता।।
रिषिपतिनी मन सुख अधिकाई। आसिष देइ निकट बैठाई।।
दिब्य बसन भूषन पहिराए। जे नित नूतन अमल सुहाए।।
कह रिषिबधू सरस मृदु बानी। नारिधर्म कछु ब्याज बखानी।।

This is further to Doha 4 of Aranya Kand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas which we covered in the last post.

At Muni’s ashram Sita met Ansuiya Ji and politely grabbed her feet in very discreet manner, wife of Muni Attri also with surging pleasure in her heart blessed Sita and made her sit close to herself. She then dressed Sita with divine clothes and nice ornaments which would never get dirty and look like new always (that way ending Sita’s worry on that account while journeying in dense forests). Then Muni’s wife, with concern like an elderly person, gave Sita some basic advice that married women must follow.

मातु पिता भ्राता हितकारी। मितप्रद सब सुनु राजकुमारी।।
अमित दानि भर्ता बयदेही। अधम सो नारि जो सेव न तेही।।
धीरज धर्म मित्र अरु नारी। आपद काल परिखिअहिं चारी।।
बृद्ध रोगबस जड़ धनहीना। अधं बधिर क्रोधी अति दीना।।
ऐसेहु पति कर किएँ अपमाना। नारि पाव जमपुर दुख नाना।।
एकइ धर्म एक ब्रत नेमा। कायँ बचन मन पति पद प्रेमा।।

Anusuiya Ji said, “O Princess, truly, parents and brothers as also other well wishers do help and take care but a husband is provider for a life time and gives so much that can’t be quantified hence a woman who would not serve and respect him is really one of the worse kind. It is said that one’s patience, his capacity to follow Dharma, steadfastness of his friends and loyalty of his woman, these four matters can only be judged rightly when he undergoes some difficult times (in ordinary times they might seem perfect).

A husband who is either old, diseased, foolish, pauper, deaf, blind, angry by nature or very weak, even such a one should not be treated with disrespect or condemned by wife, for doing this she will have to visit hell after death and suffer in many ways. For a wife the right course, the right practice and right resolve is to have attachment with her husband physically and mentally and also in terms of behavior.
जग पति ब्रता चारि बिधि अहहिं। बेद पुरान संत सब कहहिं।।
उत्तम के अस बस मन माहीं। सपनेहुँ आन पुरुष जग नाहीं।।
मध्यम परपति देखइ कैसें। भ्राता पिता पुत्र निज जैंसें।।
धर्म बिचारि समुझि कुल रहई। सो निकिष्ट त्रिय श्रुति अस कहई।।
बिनु अवसर भय तें रह जोई। जानेहु अधम नारि जग सोई।।
पति बंचक परपति रति करई। रौरव नरक कल्प सत परई।।
छन सुख लागि जनम सत कोटि। दुख न समुझ तेहि सम को खोटी।।
बिनु श्रम नारि परम गति लहई। पतिब्रत धर्म छाड़ि छल गहई।।
पति प्रतिकुल जनम जहँ जाई। बिधवा होई पाई तरुनाई।।

“There are four types of loyal women, Vedas, Puranas and saints too say the same, for best of them there is no other man in the whole world to think about other than the husband, for the second best a husband of someone else is to be looked at only as brother (if in same age group), as father (if elderly) and as son (if younger than self), the third category of women is represented by those who stay back home just for honoring social custom and are definitely not to be appreciated, however, the lowliest of them are those who don’t stray because there is no occasion or they fear stepping out of the wedlock and are to be condemned.

“The ones who are unfaithful to husband and enjoy company of stranger, fall in worst kind of hell for ages after ages; they for the pleasure of a few moments chose punishment that runs for many later lives and hence who is more debased and vile than them.

“Those of the women who without any deviation remain faithful, easily attain best in this world and even get liberated without any other strenuous efforts. On the other side who remain adverse to their husbands face widowhood while young in their next life.

सो0-सहज अपावनि नारि पति सेवत सुभ गति लहइ।
जसु गावत श्रुति चारि अजहु तुलसिका हरिहि प्रिय।।5क।।
सनु सीता तव नाम सुमिर नारि पतिब्रत करहि।
तोहि प्रानप्रिय राम कहिउँ कथा संसार हित।।5ख।।

“A woman who might be seen as incapable of exercising means for higher spiritual advancement, gets the high status and blissful times just by serving husbands dutifully; Tulsi (the holy basil plant) is most dear to Lord Hari even today though she had had to suffer bad turns in life, just because of her attachment to husband (its a Poranic story).

“O Sita, remembering your name, the ladies in the world discharge their duties towards husband (because you have already demonstrated by very high standard of your deeds), I know this and also know that you are most dear to your husband Shri Ram, I have recounted this for the benefit of all ladies in the world.”

(In modern times this part in Ramayan might be looked at with some skepticism that why only women are advised in this way, but this forms the solid base for the stability of married life in India. The duties of husband might not have been expressly told but Shri Ram demonstrated highest level of commitment towards Sita through out His life and by remaining avowedly single in absence of Sita.)
