This is further to Doha 9 of Aranya Kand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas which we covered in last post.

There was one enlightened disciple of Muni Agatya whose name was Sutikshna (the meaning of the word is ‘wise and sharp’), he had high level of affection for Lord Shri Ram and was a devoted servant of Him, in thought, deeds and speech, without any reliance on any other deity at all. He got news of Shri Ram’s arrival. Anxious and hopeful of meeting him, he ran hurriedly to find Him.

Mulling about the matter he thought,”is a fool like me fated to receive kind attention of Raghuraj Shri Ram who is known to be friend of people with little means. Would my master Lord Shri Ram and His younger brother Lakshman meet me as their own servant. I am slightly skeptical for I don’t have much to claim by way of having devotion, dispassion and knowledge (Bhakti, Vairahya and Gyaan which Sita, Lakshman and Ram represent symbolically) in my heart. I also don’t have backing of keeping good company (as I mostly wander) or of other practices like Yoga, Japa and Yagna , besides my love for Lord’s lotus feet is not very strong. But i am aware of one resolve of the merciful Lord that He surely loves and cares for those who have none other to fall back on. I am therefore sure that I would be having reward for having eyes by the chance of having  a look at His lotus like face, glimpse of which is enough to end the afflictions of the world.”

“Now wholly dependent on Shri Ram and having His thoughts only occupying his mind, the Muni with some real understanding about the Lord became totally engrossed with feeling of love for HIm; it is difficult to describe this condition of Muni, O Bhavani,” Lord Shankar told Parvati.

Muni ran helter skelter in all direction without knowing which way to go, even he forgot his identity and also where he intended to go. He turned back some times and turned again, he began to dance now and then started singing glories of the Lord.

Muni had achieved the state of being in devotional thought of the Lord continuously (which is situation hard to be in) and Lord Shri Ram looked at him with interest taking cover of tree. Noticing his intense love for Himself, Raghuveer Shri Ram, known to be stealing the fear of the world from heart of His devotee,  manifested in Muni’s heart. This made Muni stunned and sit down right in the middle of the road while his body looked like jack-fruit because his body hair stood on end.

Raghunath Shri Ram then came near the Muni, He appreciated the condition of the Muni and was happy to note that Muni loved Him so much. Shri Ram wanted to wake Muni and tried in many ways but Muni did not respond for he was now enjoying the pleasure of concentrated attention on the form of Shri Ram in his meditative state. Lastly Shri Ram withdrew His image of Raja Ram (Ram as a King) from Muni’s heart and showed His four-armed form as Lord Vishnu. This made Muni rise up agonizingly in the same fashion a serpent does when its Mani is taken out from its head.

With eyes now open, Muni found Shri Ram standing in front, His body’s complexion attractive and dark; the blissful Lord was accompanied by Sita and younger brother Lakshman. The Muni, overwhelmed with love for them, fell at their feet like a pole, he had now become most fortunate. Shri Ram picked him up with his long arms and expressing His great love for the Muni brought him close to His heart (Shri Ram confirmed that He understands only the language of love and converses in it).

Shri Ram holding Muni in His arm looked like Tamal (a tree which has dark color bark) circling tree of gold (here Muni is compared to gold which is known for purity). Looking at pretty face of Shri Ram, Muni stood still like he was a figure in a picture.

Later Muni collected himself and grabbed feet of the Lord time and again and escorted Him to his own ashram and worshiped Him there in many different ways.

We have now covered up to Doha 10 of Aranya Kand.
